I haven't found much ice that I really like yet. But I figure most places should be good after this weekend's arctic air mass arrives. |

Location: minocqua, wi. | ice conditions in northern wisconsin are fantastic but without a slow-down on the deep freeze we'll have some problems with freeze-out on some lakes with a winter kill.
fishing up to the last cold snap was incredible with some pigs hitting the ice and then it shut down. hoping tonight and tomorrow's warm-up will open a window again before it all slams shut on Sunday-Monday.
a couple of the gooder ones we caught … there were a few more bigguns that came through the hole for a photo op too. ;0)

Location: Hayward, WI | Jon those are some pigs! Long northerns and what a build on that walleye!
We're at 5 above in Hayward right now but 15-25mph wind. Started at -5 at 6:00 this morning. I had back to back -30 on my way to work each side of New Years.
I haven't been out but this wind is going to be brutal. I'd much rather have -25 and calm than +15 and howling.
The ice is ok in the Hayward area. The bigger deep lakes are doing quite well on ice at about 15 solid, dry inches. They had almost 0 ice when we got 2 days of heavy snow, and what ice there was must have melted. The lakes that had 3-5 inches just prior to the big snow have been full of slush for a couple weeks now. Got my ATV stuck on one and if there hadn't been 2 of us I'm not sure how I'd have made it out of that mess. I imagine with these 2 cold snaps the slush should be firming up at least enough for an ATV to stay on top of it, but there's going to be about 8 inches of slush/junk ice on top of the good stuff all year on some lakes.

| 6 years ago, January 2008, my friend and I were on a mission to a lake that was hard to access because of the water levels....the weather was just like it looks back home right now..cold as #*#*. I remember -50 wind chills and we were in a portable over 26' of water catching nice gils and they died off and the frost in the shack was so thick. All of a sudden we had marks at 16ft again and jigged back up. We ended up catching 4 of the biggest crappies I've seen. I think it was a fluke. It had nothing to do with the weather, but whiskey. |

Quoting both of you here...
When you work with kids in the inner city, you would realize that many of them don't have coats, gloves, hats, etc...and they are the ones who DON'T have that nice pair of shoes for status, NOR the phone for status... Truly ones who don't have the $$. Have them stand at a bus stop for 15 minutes in the warmest things they have and frost bite is pretty much guaranteed. My building alone 91% of our students are on free and reduced lunch (meaning below poverty level).
This was done more to protect THOSE kids than those in suburbs or outstate who are more likely to have the means to bundle up, as the school district administrations of both Minneapolis and Saint Paul receive pressure from city officials to stay open. Governor made a good call today...

| Sometimes I really like getting into data collection and interpretation. And where I work, we have a weather station, from which I can pull current and historical data into Excel and do just about anything I want with it.
So here is some interesting summarizing temperature data from somewhere in northern MN:
Note, "Average Temp" for a month means a time-weighted average of the temperature through the course of that month. The rest is self-explanatory.
This winter has been WAY colder than the last two winters.

| I actually like the snow. The cold sucks. But the snow I don't mind very much. What I DO mind is the fact that my sump pump is frozen outside somewhere, and today I've been watching the sump pit fill up near to the top from the rain and melting snow. I've spent the last few hours trying to figure out a way to route the #*^@ thing somewhere else, and I am coming up with nothing that doesn't involve a trip to the hardware store and a lot of creative PVC engineering.
I am getting ready to just blow the #*#* out of a basement window, but that will likely only wind up right back in the sump pit.

Location: E. Tenn | 75 degrees today, but the water temps were running a consistent 43, except right at the point where the actual creek ran into a cove, then found water as warm as 50. Too far back in the coves tho to interest anything with fins. Got blown off the water by 40mph gusts.

Location: oswego, il | -6 overnight low for the flatland. I have a feeling the hatchery will run into an issue with collecting pike and musky brood conflicting with other species that need their allotted time. Already brought up as a concern by the hatchery. |

I don't know how you guys handle that kind of temps. People in my area are complaining that is +5 degrees. Got 8" inches of snow last night very unusual for this time of year. Its typically in the mid 40 by now. |
