Welcome to PART II of the Colossal Contest. Sorry for the delay between parts I and II, but here's Part II!!!

This round will be a BIT more intricate, a bit more challenging, or...if you're really creative, find a way to be lazy yet win. Put a ton of time in, put 5 minutes in...there will be FOUR winners of this round! TWO will be chosen from the winners of the last round, and two will be chosen from the rest of the people who enter here!

In Part I, you chose what you were buying with the $7,000 insurance reward, now you're going to choose where you're going to fish and what you're fishing with.

Let me set the scenario: You've been awarded $7K by your insurance adjustor for...who cares what (hint to add creativity?)...and you now have FROM APRIL 1 TO DECEMBER 1 to fish and who cares why you have this much time to fish (hint to add creativity?).

Your year will be divided into three sections:
1. April 1 to June 1
2. June 1 to September 15th.
3. September 15th to December 1st.

You decide the boat/truck combo (anything you want it to be, but you can ONLY have one combo). You decide where you're going to fish in each section of the year. You decide what you're fishing with for each portion of the year. You decide if you're chasing numbers vs. trophies.

A little creativity or humor in describing your decisions would probably help your chances in this contest.

Additional Rules:
Choose Your Rod Reel Combos:
-You can only bring 4 rod/reel combos on each portion of your year, and you can only use a total of 8 different rod/reel combos for the whole year.
Choose Your Baits/Presentation:
-You can only bring 10 lures with for each portion of the year, and you can only use a total of 20 lures for the year. (fyi, a quick set rig counts as a lure)
Additionally:
-EVERYTHING you use MUST be sold at Rollie and Helen's. For choices, check out http://www.muskyshop.com
-The contest is sponsored by Suick Lures and Tackle Industries...so you must include them as much as possible (extra credit)

Pretty simple really...choose where you're fishing for the different portions of the year. Choose your boat/truck combo. Choose your gear. Describe. Enlighten. Entertain.

Winners will recieve a prize pack of Suick Lures (www.suick.com) and will move on to the next round of the contest!

Contest starts NOW, you can edit your entry as often as you'd like, cheating (using another person's entry info) will probably get you disqualified, and the top 4 winners will be announced on January 13th.

Now get nutty!

My hunt for Chin Whiskered Charlie

Well it finally happened. After thirty years of reading Bill Gardner’s book “Time on the Water” I persuaded my wife to let me go fishing for one entire season with no interruption and best of all no work.

I have divided my quest into three time periods; the first running from April 1st to June 1st. The second period will run from June 1st to September 15th. The third period will run from September 15th to December 1st.

I have already purchased a brand spanking new Chevy Suburban 4X4, my old one lasted me for fifteen years and I could not ask for a better vehicle to travel in. It is large enough to secure all of my gear and if need be there is room to stretch out and sleep too. I have a new boat on order; this was a more difficult decision than the tow vehicle. But what I finally decided on was a Lund 1825 Pro Guide with a 90HP Mercury hanging off the back. Of course I have it outfitted with top of the line Lowrance graphs and a Minnkota up front. I decided on the Lund due to the fact that I plan on fishing almost exclusively Wisconsin lakes. I wanted a big sized boat but not too big for ease of trailering, launching, landing, and control on the water.

The first period will be spent in Southern Wisconsin and Northern Illinois. I want to take full advantage of the early season; I am planning on fishing for numbers of fish and not too worried about size this time of the year. My rod and reel combos are; St Croix Long Ranger paired with a Calcutta 400D, St Croix Top and Tail with a Calcutta 400D, Sling Blade with a Tranx PG, and a Big Nasty with a Tranx HG. My lure choices will be as follows; (2) 6” Phantom Softails (2) 7” Slammer twitch baits, (2) Suick 9” (2) Suick 9” weighted, and I persuaded Rollie and Helens to order in some of my favorite springtime baits. These would be (2) Tackle Industries MiniD Swimbaits.

The second period will be spent in Northern Wisconsin mainly Vilas/Oneida counties. I will continue to fish for numbers of fish with always a mind open for trophy fish. I pick this area as I have fished it for thirty plus years and like how I can fish small pothole lakes up to 6000 acre lakes depending on weather and how crowded the lake is. My rod and reel combos are as follows; Long Ranger with a Calcutta 400D, Lipstick with a 400D, Sling Blade with a Tranx PG, and a Big Nasty with a Tranx HG. My lure choices will be as follows; (2) Suick 9” weighted, (2) Phantom softails 7 ½”, (2) Cowgirls, (2) Slammer twitch baits 8”, and once again I persuaded R&H to order some of my favorite baits. (2) Mag SuperD.

My third period will be spent exclusively on the Chippewa Flowage. My first two fishing periods will have been a warm-up for this. I want to prove without a doubt that some of Louie Spray’s fish “Chin Whiskered Charlie” relatives still live. I am fishing for an authentic 70# Wisconsin musky. In my quest for this submarine of a fish I will be using; (2) Big Nasty with Tranx PG, (2) Sling Blade with 400D. My lure choices will be as follows; (2) Quick-set sucker rigs, (2) Mag SuperD, (2) Suick 9” weighted, (2) Slammer twitch baits 8”, (2) Phantom Softails 7 ½”.

Wish me luck on bringing the world record musky title back to Wisconsin.

quick question. As musky shop doesn't carry tackle industries, how are we supposed to include them since everything has to come from musky shop?

Good catch! Its fine if you do or don't include a tackle industries rod...but throwing one or two in wouldn't hurt, either!

for the 10 & 20 lure thing. Is it 10/20 lures total or 10/20 different lures. Example: 10 lures could be all 10 bulldawgs and that'd be it or would 10 lures be 10 totally different baits & you could bring extra backups for soft plastics (since maybe they'd get shredded) that are the exact same lure?

Um...you can choose 10 lures/stop, but only 20 lures total for all three stops. Ie. you have 20 lures (or less) to use across your entire year.

Call me Ishmael. After spending months in the hospital, recovering from severe pneumonia as a result of the hypothermia experienced from falling in the water last fall, I have a new outlook on life. I have decided that when I am fully recovered, I will spend the remainder of the year catching and releasing muskies, in search of the one that slipped through my legs and almost took my life. I have had some time to plan out what I will be taking and where I will be going. The plan is simple…fish as many great bodies of water as I can this year with a goal of 20 fish over 50”.

TI "Mag Heavy" XH Power Rod 8’6” Full Grip Paired with a Tranx PG
TI "Mega Heavy" XXH Power Rod 9’ Full Grip Paired with a Tranx HG
TI "Mag Heavy" XH Power Rod 9’ Full Grip with a Daiwa Sealine SG-Line counter

The Rig

The new rig is a 2013 Lund Pro Guide 2010 with a 200 HP Mercury, a Minnkota Terrova 101lb thrust trolling motor with i-Pilot, and a Lowrance HDS-12 Gen2 Touch with structure scan. I’ll pull the boat with a ’53 Corvette, cause I use the Jeep for deer hunting (If you don’t know this reference, we’ll just say a new Jeep).

The Trip

April 1st – June 1st
This first portion will be a good mix of numbers and big girls. I plan to start my musky fishing adventure with a trip down south, to the Jack Daniels Distillery. From there, I will head back north to Cave Run Lake for two weeks in hopes of hitting some pre-spawn females. Seasonal transition areas and shallow water will be targeted with Cranks and Rattle traps, as well as small suicks and bucktails. I will also plan to hit Green River Lake for a few days before heading north to Stonewall Jackson Lake in West Virginia for the remainder of April.

By May 3rd, I will be back up to southern WI for the opener. For the next two weeks, I will be focusing my efforts on Okauchee, Pewaukee, Okonomowoc, Silver, and the Madison Chain. On the 20th of May, I will be in Iowa for the opener on Okaboji for four days before throwing away my IA fishing license and heading back to northern Wisconsin for the opener on the 24th of May. I will be in the Hayward area, focusing on Spider, Lost Land, Sissabagama, and the Chippewa Flowage until the 6th of June.

Baits
Rapala “Rattlin Rapala” – (Shad)
Shallow invader (Crappie)
Mepps Giant Killer – Tandem (Black/orange)
Musky Mayhem Double Cowgirl (gold-orange/brass)
10” Weighted Suick – (Firetiger)
9” Weighted Suick – (yel-belly/org-grey)
Musky Mayhem Tackle SuperModel – (Black/Nickel)
10” Jake – (Black Perch)
Custom X Lures "Mini X" 8” – (glow Cisco)
Medusa Musky Topwater Globe Lure M-3 (black/orange dots)

June 1st – September 15th
The second part of my journey will start with the Minnesota Season opener on the 7th of June. This section of the trip will involve various approaches, including a lot of blades, suicks, some rubber, and topwater. Weather will dictate much of my presentation, speed, and locations for this part of the trip and the focus is on big fish. I will be spending the first week on Lake Vermillion before heading back down the Twin Cities for a week to fish White Bear, Minnetonka, Independence, Forest Lake, and Waconia until I can’t handle all the idiots anymore.

From there, I will plan a weeklong trip to St. Clair and will be back in northern MN in time to celebrate the fourth of July with Family, spending the whole month of July in the Walker, MN area and hitting Leech, Cass, Plantagenet, Wabedo, Little Boy, Bemidji, and Winnie.

Then, I suppose I should head further north, eh! The next two months will be spent (one week per lake) on the following lakes: Vermillion, Lake of the Woods, Rowan Lake, Eagle Lake, Lac Seul, and Stork Lake, Georgian Bay, and the St. Lawrence River (out of Gananoque). I will then travel back to Hayward to fish the Chippewa Flowage for the first two weeks in September until my topwater baits have been chewed to nothing.

Baits
SuperD Magnum (White Eye Walleye)
Medusa Musky Topwater Globe Lure M-3 (black/orange dots)
10” Suick Weagle – (Cash)
Mepps Giant Killer – Tandem (Black/orange)
Musky Mayhem Double Cowgirl (gold-orange/brass)
Musky Mayhem Tackle SuperModel – (Black/Nickel)
Magnum 12 inch Suick Thriller – (Black)
10” Weighted Suick – (Firetiger)
10” Jake – (Black Perch)
Shallow invader (Crappie)

September 15th – December 1st
Colorful trees, dying cabbage, and huge balls of baitfish… The Last lag of the trip is all about BIG FISH. Trolling BIG Cranks, Throwing BIG rubbers, Magnum Suicks, and Jigging Steep breaks will define this part of the hunt. Suckers will be used only when my arms are too sore to cast as a majority of this hunt is on one line per person waters. Few spots beat wind and rocks early in this portion and as I get closer to December, the steeper the breaks, the better. It will begin on September 15th with a two week trip back to Vermillion, followed by another two weeks on Leech Lake. From there, a two week trip to Green Bay will be followed by spending the last month on Mille Lacs Lake, bearing the wind and waves and hoping for a true monster.

Baits
Magnum 12 inch Suick Thriller – (Perch)
SuperD Magnum (Red Head)
Pounder UV Reflex Series Bulldawg – (Silver Cisco)
Musky Mayhem Tackle SuperModel – (Black/Nickel)
13” Grandma (Silver Prism)
13” Grandma (gold cracked ice)
10” Jake – (Black Perch)
Custom X Lures "Mini X" 8” – (glow Cisco)
7½” Bondy Bait – (black/glow tail)
Shumway Tackle "Fuzzy's Clip-N- Go" sucker Rig

Alright, time to get back to work....Oh wait, it's 5:00. See ya!

While all you guys up north are getting pounded with snow and dreaming of summer I’ll be catching monster musky down here in Nebraska from April 1 to June 1 on my home state waters of Merritt Reservoir in Nebraska. The big girls come out to feast during the magical sucker spawn. While most of you guys are sharpening the hooks on your oversized bass lures for the spring bite once the ice thaws I’ll be in full fall mode in May using the Big Nasty and Big Dawg to throw pounders and monster medusas and pull out the Tackle Industries XXH 9’ rod to chuck a homemade umbrella rig with monster medussas. I’ll toggle back and forth between the rock bite with the big plastics and the weed bite with crankbaits, twitch baits, small bucktails, and suicks and other jerkbaits on the Lipstick and Jerk rods to conjure up the monsters that are in the weeds chasing the alewives, crappie, perch, and walleye. All depends on the weather and conditions. As per our beast catching superstition/tradition Guitar Town by Steve Earle will be blasting out the Alpines in the new Duramax as we pull out of town towing the new Ranger on our way to the lake. It’s a pretty boring drive from the somewhat populated mid/eastern Nebraska to the desolate nothingness out west that is home to our Musky lake so we have to make our own comedy in between listening to cd’s and talking strategy (aka straight up bragging how we are going to dominate the lake like no one has ever done before). In the vehicle with me is my Dad, my cousin, and my sister. I’m going to do something a little bit different here and include some actual real life stories and quotes in this part. The lake is about 25 minutes past Valentine. This is cowboy country. Almost all radio stations are lost except a couple church channels. All of a sudden movie times for the new Fast and The Furious movie come on the radio for the Valentine movie theater. I say, “Are you kiddin me they barely got radio but they got the new Fast and Furious movie out here. What cowboy watches gangstas race rice grinders in Miami?” My cousin responds, “Yeah they got it, but out here it’s considered SciFi.” Then as we get closer to town there’s a huge bridge we cross over a river and valley that’s like a thousand feet up in the air. My dad says, “This is where they go Cowboy Bungee Jumping. You spit your dip and then race it to the bottom.” Once we get to the lake I have one mission on my mind. To catch the fish that I call The Freakbeast. She hit my pounder last year at boatside faster than a Kim Kardashian marriage. I set the hook with everything I had and didn’t even slow her down as she went straight under the boat and instantly let go. I pulled up a completely mangled, corkscrewed, dawgballed $35 custom colored pounder that wasn’t even able to continue figure 8’ing with. That fish has haunted me every day since then and I will catch her one day.

As with any reservoir in Nebraska it sucks once the farmers suck it dry of all it’s water and you lose all structure and are left with basically a sand bottom bathtub to fish. So from June 1 to September 15th we’re off to Lake of The Woods to concentrate on numbers and some size. I’ve never been here in real life yet so it will be a learning experience for me. I’m confident in my abilities casting crankbaits and small bucktails but I will also use this opportunity to get better with suicks and jerkbaits and throw some bigger bucktails too. This time period will also be for relaxing and enjoying the scenery, take pictures, hang out in the cabin, etc. Take it all in and enjoy the outdoors type of deal vs the hardcore fish til your body falls apart that we have to do back home and in the upcoming fall trophy season. My sister would probably be out for this trip and my uncle would be in. And as much as it pains me we’d probably have to let him do some walleye fishing too. Can’t be selfish.

After that comes the final chapter of September 15th to December 1st. This is the playoffs and Lake Mille Lacs is the arena. Time to chase the Megalodons. My uncle is out and back home on the couch watching football. Dad can’t stand up in the punishing waves of that lake and doesn’t have good warm raingear only 14 layers of hobo clothes so he’s out too. Probably cutting firewood like it’s going out of style. Sister is hardcore so she’s back in. Me and my cousin never leave the boat. So we’ve decided to split our time between casting monster plastics, big jerkbaits, and jigs, and trolling huge crankbaits. We cast more than we troll but every now and then you need a break to sit down. It’s freezing out and the waves are absolutely brutal. As were trolling along a boat drives past us and we recognize him. It’s Chuck Norris and he’s shivering like a puppy dog while we’re drinking our Carmelized Bacon Shakes from the casino. Cause real men drink bacon. We laugh at how much of a wuss he is and make fun of him for walleye fishing and ask him if we can bait up his trophy walleye on a quickset rig. I then remind him he owes me a new Tackle Industries rod from when I whooped him in an arm wrestling match. He gives some complaint about being late for a Musky Noodling competition or something and drives off just as my sister and cousin’s rods both slam. We think great, that jackwad drove over our lines but then soon realize that we were wrong and they had a double going. I flip the switch on the flashing lights and sound the Horn of Gondor. It’s go time. I grab the big kahuna and slip it under one then the next and boom we got two 50+ lb behemoths in the net at once. Add that to the one I got earlier working a wild action wabull on a shallow reef and that’s 3 trophy fish that day that were all over 55” and 50 lbs. Not bad for the last day of the season. After pictures and some live footage of the releases my wife (Mila Kunis if you remember part I of this) calls and says I gotta get home cause Paul McCartney just dropped by and wants to jam. So we load the boat, pop in some Highway To Hell and fade out into the sunset reminiscing about our best season yet.

When we last left, our intrepid hero was in disbelief as his world burned around him. What’s next in store? Will he recover? Will the checked specter be brought to justice? Find out in this next installment of “As the Prop Turns”...

It has been a long, cold 5 months since that fateful day in late November. Five months of rebuilding, rebuying, restocking, and plain old recharging my batteries. The new garage is bigger and better than ever with space for all the toys. The diesel Grand Cherokee is resting in the new stable, ready to ferry the flame-washed red X-190 to any pool, pond, lagoon, or puddle where muskie dreams can be turned into reality only to be released back to the depths.

In between starting the new chapter of christening the new craft with a fresh coat of slime I spent my time wearing through the soles of my shoes, rubbing my knuckles raw, and twisting arms while bending ears to any sportsman, countryman, or statesman that would listen (and may have kissed a baby or too). Why? To bring back better times and rescue the dying fishing industry in our great northwoods; it was time to breathe some life back into the kickers and get trolling back on the menu.

The sportsmen, to say the least, were not receptive. Stuck in tar with their heads in the sand, afraid of endless parades of boats and boards on their lake with no room to cast. ‘Swimmers would get tangled and drown, just think of the children!’ My words were venom to them.

Countrymen, oh the countrymen. Visions of a parade of boats and boards danced across their eyes like a line of chorus girls to seamen fresh off the boat on leave. It would save their resorts, diners, and shops and bring the family back to rescue their lake. My words flowed like milk and honey to them.

$tate$men were the easy part. Shake some hands, grea$e some wheel$, and get them to do what they do best: meddle in things beyond their elected knowledge on their lakes. My word$ meant nothing to them.

In the days leading up to the April, Spring Conservation Congress Hearings I had been confident in my efforts, but a storm was approaching. The sportsmen had been doing the same as myself, but gathering a mob and wearing out the sidewalks, I know I’m out numbered and wouldn't have a dog in this fight except for a few notes taken from the Chicago politicians: If you can’t beat em, buy em.

So buy em I did! With the help of a called in favor from a cousin who owns a bussing company. We gathered up some downstate guys where mechanically pulling baits is legal and shipped them up here (with the promise of a couple Big-macs along the way) to tilt Lady Justice’s scaled in our favor.

The night of the Hearing went surprisingly well. There was the usual grump form the sportsmen about “Little Johnny” and spat between them and the countrymen, all the while my travelling band of trollers sat quietly and filled and the ballot box with ‘yes’. It was clear it was going to pass.

To celebrate I snuck out to enjoy a Cuban that’s been stashed for such an occasion. But as I waltzed through the doors a familiar sight met my eyes. There, propped up against a light pole was a familiar checkered sight, surrounded by a glowing aura of cigarette smoke as he puffed away. His fedora slightly askew, as if to shade the fire burning in his eyes from me. There was a slight tremble in his voice this time, trying to temper back the eruption within.

“You just [edited] don’t know when to call it [redacted] quits do ya! As surely as I stand here today, this will be your [removed] […] [one more time] time anything happens again! These are MY [profanity] green carp in MY lakes!”

He inched closer.

“BLAAERRGHHERHHDGHGH!!!!!!!”

In a flash, he stumbled at me in a wild, blinded rage with a hurricane of fists.

My heart palpated as my eyes flashed around, looking for an escape, but my feet too frozen to move when my hands clinched in my pockets around a cold metallic object. Keys! Keys to the bus! Against all my intuition I sped at him, at the last moment leaving his jock on the pavement with a move Sweetness would stand in awe at.

A cold, pleather bus seat had never felt so good as I slammed the doors shut and rumbled the behemoth to life. There were only two things in the way of my path to freedom now, his Roadmaster and my right foot. I was not about to let a rusting relic from the 80’s stop my journey. Stomping with all my might, the bust lurched forward, peeling the bumper from his wagon in a shower of sparks, lighting the open road ahead. He was left to choke on a diesel-induced fog, cursing to the heavens.

I figured it best to let things settle down before I return to my home waters in Vilas. Ditching the bus and making an escape to retreat on the hardest working river in the world and fish some backwaters and sloughs in search of solitude and a couple green submarines south of 10 in the Central Sands, prepping me for a return to finish out my yearly allotted time on the water roaming the lakes in God’s country. So as I sit at the ramp, waiting for the clock to strike midnight and ring in a new season of anticipation, success, backlashes and heart break, a stranger approaches.

”I see the transom is barren. You know, it’s bad luck to fish from a boat without a name.”

I thought for a second, stood up and simply replied “Phoenix”.

Rise.

Choosing to fish Cave Run, LOTW, and LSC out of a new Ranger 175T pulled by a Ford F-150. Rig may be on the smallish side for some of the waters I intend to fish, but it will be far easier to maneuver and haul. I will be casting majority of the time with vertical jigging mixed in when necessary, so the boat should be well suited for my methods of fishing. I recognize that there will be times when trolling and/or live bait would be more effective, but I will have more fun doing it my way in the long run.

Each of the lakes specified holds the potential for catching numbers of fish as well as quality fish. They all provide the opportunity to catch fish casting/jigging in the designated time of year. Additionally, each of these baits are proven fish-catchers for each lake during the likely seasonal conditions.

With the Griswold Family Xmas in the can it was time to set our sights on a little winter getaway. So to cure the doldrums we jetted the family out to Vegas and put our luck on the line. We began the trip with high hopes and dreams of striking it big, but unfortunately I ran into the unluckiest blackjack dealer on the strip, who I swear had put some kind of a curse on me. He was like that big 50” that follows you boatside only to smile at you and laugh. Well, as you would’ve guessed, I lost nearly everything but the shirt off my back and was agonizing over all the trips I would be backing out of. Just when I thought my summer was toast, my son (aka Papa Georgio) hits the jackpot in miraculous fashion setting the course for the most incredible summer ever. I was able to do a 180 and go from cancelling trips to lining them up as fast as I can. In fact, it turns out so good that I tell my boss, Frank Shirley, to take the job and shove it because I’m taking the family on the Griswold musky vacation and it’s gonna last the entire season, or at least until Cousin Eddy tracks us down!

So to kick things off, we hop in the brand new F-150 and pull the new Ranger 620VS, stacked with Lowrance’s in every corner, down south to Cave Run and spend the first half of April there. Then we start heading back up north and hit up the Webster, Tippee, and Barbee Chain in Indiana for a couple weeks. After that we pound the Madison Chain for a couple weeks before heading up to tour Vilas County for the second half of May. Our objective here is to crank out numbers, we’re gonna be releasing muskies like it’s our job. This will lay the groundwork for the remainder of the season and hopefully unveil some new confidence baits along the way.

Once MN opener hits in June we’re chasing big girls in the bays and adjacent open water of the Big V. We fish that for a couple weeks until Ontario opener when we head up to LOTW and spend the summer learning every inch of shoreline we can of Canada’s crown jewel. To expand our horizons we head north and donate a few weeks to Cedar Lake, Eagle, and Lac Seul over the course of the trip. Our plan here is to spend the summer thru mid-October on the Canadian Shield taking in the full God’s Country experience. The sheer beauty and endless number of islands, bays, and channels to explore keeps us plenty busy and give us no reason to leave earlier. As for the fish, we’re getting the best of both worlds, numbers and size. We know we’re going to be catching and seeing multiple fish each day with a good shot at a fifty every time we leave the dock.

To wrap up the dream season, we head back down to the states and throw big rubber on Mille Lacs until our arms are about to fall off. If we’re not marking bait, we’re trolling to cover ground and find a new pack to cast to and stay on them for the final 6 weeks. This is big fish time, the days are getting shorter and we’ve gotta fish efficiently. We’re in search of releasing a MN record, tracking schools of ciscoes from sun-up to sun-down is the name of the game.

Here’s our weapons of choice:

Here are the details of part #1 of how the story began.
With my old, lazy dog JoJo beside me, I look upon the twinkling lake thanking God for my luck in losing everything. I lost my boat, my truck, my gear, and my wife. Over the past few months, all were proven replaceable, especially the wife. However, I’m not worrying about replacing her just yet.
I won the coin toss for our yearly vacation destination. My wife wanted Cancun; I wanted Minnesota. I drove most of the way, and asked my wife to drive just a couple hours to give me some shut eye. Somehow, after an hour of sleeping, I awoke to my wife’s cursing, which itself wasn’t anything new. However, the splashing of water into the truck windows was a new occurrence. According to her, she swerved to avoid a squirrel. How that squirrel got onto the middle Blatnik Bridge still fascinates the police, my best buddy/insurance agent, and myself. Regardless, my original truck and boat are still at the bottom of Lake Superior. I guess my best buddy did learn something during our college days because he hooked me up with a new truck and boat in an incredibly fast insurance claim replacement. He even paid my deductible for me claiming it was his way of saying thanks for not telling anyone about our Spring Break escapade in Tijuana. He also hooked me up with a $7000 gift certificate to Rollie and Helens to replace my gear.
We sold the house. My wife went to live her mom. It’s a good situation; they’re both crazy. I packed up JoJo and my clothes, took my gift certificate, and headed to Minnesota to celebrate. The sweet, sweet internet allowed me to order all my gear online and have it delivered to my new residence. JoJo and my Rollie and Helens gear are much better company that that crazy woman. Below is a list of my replacement gear.

Part #2 of the story continues as follows.
The $7000 Rollie and Helens replacement check came fast thanks to me best buddy/insurance agent. My mind fleetingly recalled the causative events for this check: a quick vacation nap, subsequent wreck, then a total loss all of my trusty gear, boat included. They had been with me longer than my wife. Well, my ex-wife now. The gear, I miss; my wife, not so much. She was really upset when I decided to use my half of our savings to fund a year of what the yuppies would call finding myself. Thankfully, after a near-death experience, my boss tended to understand my need for regrounding myself. Heck, if I get a year of fishing, I’ll go with whatever they wanted to call it. My replacement boat and truck combo has been amazing. The Ford F350, Tuffy 2100, and Mercury 250 Pro XS are great. I decided to spend my existential journey/extended fishing sabbatical on the local waters near Chicago. I began fishing in April 2014 as soon as the water was open. My list of gear is as follows.

Perhaps you guys remember what happen to me a couple of months ago; how I caught my first 50” fish and then I got caught - caught-up in a funnel cloud that landed me in the middle of a tree. I tell ya it’s strange how one’s luck can go from good to bad, back to good and then back to bad in such a hurry. At least for the moment, things have gotten better than ever!

As I had shared, my insurance came through. I replaced my gear and fell into a really good deal for a temporary rig (an aluminum G3 that will work well for small lakes and skinny water). I was back fishing before the start of 2014 (one of the few advantages we Southern muskie guys have - open season and open water in December).
I was feeling great about how everything had worked out. Life was good again. That is, until things went seriously sour at work. Allow me to share what happen…

It seems my boss’ son will make a good detective someday. He’s not a bad kid at all. I say that because he loves to hear the stories of my fishing exploits. His dad is a work-a-holic so he rarely takes him fishing or even finds time to toss a ball with him. I’ve taken him on bass trips on a couple of occiasions. Like I said, he’s not a bad kid. But for a little while there I wanted to strangle him. Apparently, he stumbled across MuskieFirst. He managed to figure out I was “hawkeye9.” Not that that would be such a bad thing in most instances…if it weren’t for the fact that he searched all of my posts; including the one where I told the story about losing my boat and gear in the tornado. The little sh*& was quick to show daddy (a chip off the old block when it comes to being serious about one’s responsibilities…even at the ripe age of 14!).

If you remember, I was a little overly explicit on how I fool my secretaries into believing I’m working more than what I actually am. I’m sure that’s what the ole’ man’s beef was really all about, but he used some concern of sexual misconduct as the reason for letting me go (just because I talked about my secretary’s skimpy skirts). Funny, because he is the one who hired her and it certainly wasn’t for her secretarial skills. Again, it was really about the money he thought he was losing by me not working as much or as hard as him.

First job I’ve ever been fired from in all my life. As you can imagine, I was pretty low for a couple days. It was a really good job, with incredibly good benefits. But bad luck changes as fast as good though. My boss’ attorney just happens to be a drinking buddy of mine. He came to my rescue in a big way. I got a record severance check: 6 month’s pay with benefits plus $85k in a mutual no-fault/goodwill clause.

The good luck got even better. Our primary competitor learned of my availability within three days and offered me a position. A really good position. Doing the same sort of work, for generally the same sort of pay. But the position is replacing a guy who isn’t retiring until the end of 2014. So the good luck just keeps getting better and better. I’m getting paid to take a year off of work!

Wanna take a guess what I’ll be doing? No need…I’m about to spill it. Before I do though, I suppose I ought to share that I’ve got a new ranger 620 on order. I mean, seriously $85k for just not saying anything bad about my former employer. (Yeah, I’ll have to buy beers for Joe at the Eagle’s Nest for the rest of my life, but that’s a small price to pay. Besides he drinks Stag for god’s sake!)

So this will come as no real surprise. I’m closing up the house for a good long while and chasing fish. A dream come true for all of us I’m sure. I’ve decided that I’m going to concentrate on learning three bodies of water. That way, even when I go back to being a normal guy, I’ll be able to return to these systems that I’ve spent a significant amount of time on with hopefully enough knowledge to be consistently productive on week long trips.

Furthermore, I’ve made the decision to take a minimalistic approach. I’m packing light. I mean super light. I’m going to take only ten lures with me to each of my three destinations. I’ll force myself in this way to throw just those lures that are consistent producers for the way I like to fish. Again, deepening my knowledge for returned productivity. It’s my hope that this 2014 season will be my most productive season ever – not just because of the size or number of fish that I encounter, but because I hope to learn more than ever.

Oh and by the way, I plan on tent camping the majority of the time. I know it sounds absolutely insane, but that’s the joy of being foolish. I’ve got all the gear, and I’m sure I’ll grab a cheap motel from time to time, but generally I plan on roughing it. I’m gonna be one beat up fella before the end of the year…and I can’t wait.

So here’s the plan:

From April to the end of May I’ll be on Cave Run. I know, I know there are much better lakes to spend a dream trip on, but this is my dream. Learning a lake close enough to return to again and again with regular frequency. Besides, I’d like to learn another Southern reservoir to have in my repertoire for a lifetime of fishing. Having another lake even further South from my home waters on Kinkaid will fit the bill perfectly. I’ll be staying at Twin Knobs Campground. Wash houses are key!
I have no real intention of trolling the Cave except for mapping purposes.

It goes without saying that all the proper release tools, net, replacement hooks, plenty of stealth leaders, camera, etc. are all loaded but as for rod and reel combos and baits this is what is gonna get the nod…

From June 1st to September 15th I’ll be on the northwest angle, Lake of the Woods. I’m staying at Young’s Bay Resort. Again, a warm shower is nice! Muskie fishing on LOTW is (as anyone who has been there can tell you) as good as it gets. If God continues to bless me, this is where I’ll spend the days of my retirement. So nows the time to really start to learn the water. Again, trolling will be at a minimum so I’m taking no trolling specific rods and reels.

A few changes in gear on my travels up North. The MH TI rod will be swapped out for an XXH. As far as baits, the showgirls will go home and we’ll pull out some 10’s. The shallow invader, Jake, and Believer get replace with some larger offering and so does the weagle (most especially…it’s time to get a bigger Hardhead in the line-up.) Nobody’s taking my Suick’s away for me, but I may end up with a couple of cans of spray paint from Walmart before the end of this trip.

I’ll be finishing my journey on the Mille Lacs. From Sept 16 to Dec. 1st. Oh I know some think she has seen her days go by, but she still hold giants don’t kid yourself. She holds ‘em and will continue to give them up for years to come. I could join everyone else in the musky world on Lake St. Clair, but thank you very much ma’am, I’ll be just fine chasing the giants on the pond. I may do a bit of camping, but I’m not gonna kid myself too much. Time to break into some of that saving so I’ve got a one bedroom reserved at Chapman’s.

Time to start trolling, so we’ve got some changes coming. Minus the 10’s and Hardheads. Swapping out the jerk bait combo and the TI for a couple of trollers as well.
