I’m thinking of trying some of those saltwater double hooks on my shallow running crank baits. I was thinking that I could rubberband them to the bottom of the bait so they would be more weedless. If you rubberband a treble hook it just wraps around the body of the bait with only one point sticking out, but with these I think I could rig them so both are sticking out at 45 degrees or so from the bottom of the bait. Not completely weedless, but better than a dangling treble hook – especially when backing out. I don’t think my hooking percentage would go down much either, possibly even increase. Has anybody tried this before? How’d it work for you? Thanks.

I have never tried it but it may interfere with the action of the lure if you rubberband the hooks to it..

NWR, I have tried this approach and you absolutly loose bait action and it seems that when you do get hung-up its actualy harder to snap the bait free and at that point you have lost the rubber(oh,oh)anyways so you end up not only re-rigging but also removing some debris. If the area is thicker then normal and the standard crank down back out method is not working, I have(don`t laugh)taken for example a shallow-raider taken all the hooks off then put a 7/0-8/0 trailer hook on the back location with a schrink tube from a top-raider repair kit and this bait comes through the crap alot better then most! I am going to have this perfected for 2003 season as last year located several fish in the crapola and was having a hard time with them.Oh by the way that sloppe-pig had been attacked 6/7 times with no hook-ups,thats no longer an option for me!If I ever figure out how to post a picture,I will put this bait up for show! Thanks Handy, The shrink tube is another option I’m considering on the double hook. I think shrink tubing would allow it to lie along the bottom edge nicely. I guess the hampering of the lure’s action depends on the lure. I plan to make some lures from scratch, so I guess I can make sure the lure has plenty of action to begin with; maybe even a little drop in the belly to hide the hook behind too. Thanks again.

I have a big Yo Zuri saltwater crank that came with the double hooks. They seemed to hook fewer weeds and fewer fish. After the bait was full of tooth marks from being attacked by pike after pike on a Canadian trip with few hook ups, I finally changed the hooks to trebles and greatly improved my hooking percentage for this bait.
