I opened up the drain plugs on my 40hp Mercury Thursday day and let it drain. The boat is in my garage but still, it was mighty cold here in Wisconsin.

It filled it today, but it was odd. It didn't take the 14oz or so which is the capacity.
Could it be that it didn't fully drain because of the cold ?

I filled from the bottom and kept pumping until lube started coming out of the top.

Just one of those hhhmm moments.

Any ideas?

I pump some new oil in the top, until I see it come out the bottom. Then fill it up from the bottom. No one ever told me to do this , I just thought it could push out any contaniments.

If no water or milky oil came out when you drained it you should be good

Sounds like you did it right. Was the motor straight up and down. Maybe there was air trapped.
