| Insurance or not, it's still a huge loss. Check your policies, folks. Many of the things you think would be covered at replacement value (you truck, your boat, and all your gear for starters) very well may not be. And try proving to your insurance company that you had several thousand dollars in lures alone, or that you really did have 8 musky rods @ $200 each. Even with the best insurance policy in the world, you're still looking at a family that is homeless with nothing but the clothes on their backs until the insurance company settles months from now. |

| Horrible news and such a horrible sight. Glad everyone is safe. THAT is the important thing. Houses, furniture, boats, trucks, lures, rods, reels, those are material items that can be easily replaced. Lives can't.
I would surely hope...and like to think, that anyone running a guide business would have all of their gear itemized and a completely separate insurance policy for everything, as a business, not just a rider on their homeowners.
This is why anyone in this hobby/sport/business that wants to protect themselves in an instance like this, must take the time and energy to inventory, catalog, PHOTOGRAPH and VIDEO everything for insurance purposes and most likely have a separate rider on their homeowners. We all know the sport fishing crowd accumulates a lot of gear in the way of lures, rods, reels, etc. How many actually take the time though, to do as I've described above? I'll admit...it's been on my mind...for yeeeeaaars to do that very thing, but...I haven't yet. And if I was to have a fire, it'd all be gone because I'd have no way of proving any of it.
Those that hang their lures, out in the open on those really cool lure boards in their basements and/or a garage have a great opportunity right in front of them to make that job a pretty easy task. I agree...no one wants to sit down to take the time to inventory it all and create some crazy Excell spreadsheet...but....then put yourself in Hammernick's shoes right here, right now and just think about all that you have and what you risk losing. It may change your mind during these winter months to give you project to work on during the hardwater season.

| One suggestion to help with insurance claims is to keep updated photos/digital records in a safe deposit box. Every six months take photos of your home, belongings, making sure the camera has date stamp turned on. Take the photos on a flash drive and place in a safe deposit box. Makes it much easier for claims when it is theft or fire. For things like lures, lay them out at the beginning of the season and take photos. Same for rod and reel combos. Witht todays cameras it is quick and easy. Do the same for fire arms, bows, etc. Take photos of your electronic equiment. |

Location: Minnesota. | What a horrible situation. nobody knows what that does to you unless you experience it. I didn't.
Two seasons ago I had a fire that started in my garage. ...Don't ask....stupid thing I did. Anyways we lost everything in the garage and much in the main house to include a new Mazda and my '97 Ranger 681VS. Thank goodness we were 101% ins. covered for "replacement value" since we built in '83.
The damage it does to you is indescribable. I hope they were well covered.
We fully recovered everything from State Farm. No questions asked and I didn't have any pictures to prove anything. No questions!! It was amazing the way that co. took care of us.
We were _amned lucky!

Location: MN | I'm sure the last thing on Jason's mind is how his insurance is going to cover his muskie equipment. Prayers go out to him and his family. |
