Has anyone seen the pictures of the big fish die off going on over at Owasso? Saw it on the mnoutdoor forum's muskie section. Lots of dead +40" muskies. They were saying that some fish may have been transported out of there? Anyone heard anything?

So sad....

Sounds like a herbicide was used to kill of some invasive species and the were excessive. Dose anyone know who the limnologist was on this herbicide application?

I would be surprised if the kill is not indirectly related to the spraying. The decaying of aquatic plant matter eating up the oxygen. I know I'm just guessing, but the increased spraying may have backfired. Sad indeed .

Read the second link I posted it will tell you everything that was applied and by who. I also notice that in April of 2014 their extra application permit was going to run out, makes you wonder.

The lake was treated by Lake Management Inc. 651-433-3283.

That sucks big time. Was a fun little lake to fish with the chance of a big reward. Hope dnr gets down to the bottom of this.

Never liked the fact they use 2-4-D in water. It doesn't discriminate. Kills all broad leaf plant life. Invasive or not. They're supposed to apply it in dead calm conditions to prevent drift. Of course so are lawn companies. Sigh.

I read somewhere they DNR "findings" was too much oxygen. How could this be? It certainly wouldnt seem to be normal behavior for fish to head to shallower water to seek less oxygen, at least to me anyway.
Apparently those permits allowed for treating 3 times the normal littoral area that is typically permissable by the state.
Super sad deal. Now with snow covering the ice this whole story will get forgotten about. It was only newsworthy because people were seeing dead fish everywhere under the ice.

A little history show this lake has had die offs in the past, but I believe they were all in late winter.
Its really sad, there were some extremely nice fish that died which will take many years to replace. Walleyes up to 30 inches and many big bass and muskies. Even carp which those things tend to survive with very little oxygen at all.
Anyone know if an explosion in phosphorous concentration would lead to an excessive oxygen scenario? From guys that fish the lake a lot it was extremely murky like pea soup and VERY FEW weeds at all this past year. Water clarity less than 6 inches at times.

dead organic material consumes oxygen if the herbicide was applied in access then the dead plant materials would remove oxygen. This is a characteristic of internal loading and i can't think of an explosion of phosphorus ever causing excessive oxygen. Fall turnover mixes Dissolved oxygen into the water then after ice over the dead organic plant material and bacteria should consume some of that oxygen. Unless there is a special scenario I haven't heard of before i think it would be a lack of oxygen and not an excess amount of it.

Over the years I've seen these types of kills on Harriet and Bald Eagle (granted, I didn't see muskies floating to the top in either situation). After following up on the issues with the MN DNR, I was told the oxygen issue was probably the cause. I wasn't surprised when I heard oxygen change being cited on this lake. Not sure I buy the reason, but they have been pretty consistent for a decade or so on this type of response.
