Location: Sycamore, IL | I need some help choosing which "BIG" flat sided crankbait to purchase:
1. 12" Slammer
2. 13" Grandma
3. 14" Jake
If you could only get one which one would you get and why? Any other options out there that I am missing? Thanks guys!

Location: Appleton | Seems like your missing a Custom X 12" Magnum. Why?? The last few years they've caught some giant fish. Of the ones on your original list I'd go with the Slammer. Solid bait that will take a beating. |

Location: Minnetonka | Duff Thury's Headlock is a big fish bait. It has a great "walk" at the right speed that makes it move out a couple feet left and right of its natural path. Good Trigger. Unfortunately, they're pretty tough to get your hands on these days. As for Lures mentioned, Jake's rattle and Grandmas don't (exluding hook noise), if that matters to you. A lot of guys I know did well on the Hologram superman G-ma and I found that the Jake's Hologram stickers peel off after only a few runs. Grandmas are generally cheaper, though I usually look at the tags only after I leave the store - I get more baits that way. |

Location: Sycamore, IL | Thanks for the suggestions guys...I've already got a Headlok( and its awesome!!!), so I can check that one off the list:)
I am leaning towards the Slammer but wondering how it trolls at slower speeds? I am looking for a bait that has a wide wobble that I can run in the 6-10ft depth range. I have done well on Grandma and Jake baits in the past but haven't tried any of the larger Slammer baits, just their small twitch baits-which I like. Do any of these baits have a slower rise than the others? I will be rowing these as well as using a motor. Thanks

Location: Grand Marais, MN | All are workable options, but i prefer big games (they got a really wide, beautiful wobble and they are made of wood) over the grandmas and jakes.
Ive caught muskies on the grandmas and jakes and I like them, but they are made out of plastic that doesn't have any inherent buoyancy. on a few of mine After a few fish the internal hook hanger has cracked away from the plastic body of the lure and they start taking on water and either lose buoyancy or dont swim right.
not that big games and custom x are indestructible, but i've had them last longer due to the fact that they are made of wood. just another thing to consider. |

But we get "in tune " with this bait or that bait, and that's the one we can feel, anticipate, and in turn respond to when a fish moves it. I think you have to spend enough time with a bait to get to know it. With little changes you can take most baits from dog to Hawg! |

Location: Grand Rapids MN | All Slammer baits have been tough and good baits to me. Great lures.
I tried some 12" Custom X this fall on LOTW and was super impressed with them. Great action and run similar in line out vs depth as jakes and grandmas so like others mentioned the low learning curve and you don't had to adjust your trolling "style". Another huge thing I liked is its buoyancy. When hung up it backed out very fast and I don't think we had to turn around for this bait to get it free. I beat this bait over rocks for 2.5 days and it ran perfect with no durability issues.
Lastly Hose baits are great lures as well. Flat shads and big daddy's are flat sided lures. Great baits but a little pricier. |

| It might be a good idea to consider what / how you are going to be trolling. (depth, pattern, etc) before picking the lure. They all have their strong points and they all catch fish, just depends on the appropriate circumstance.
Just as an example, if you are fishing a pattern where they are in the top 5' of the water column, then the baits you have listed would only be viable on very short lines. Trolling is a precision game, so it makes sense to add some of these variables to the mix when picking presentation. |

| I have several of the 13" Grandmas and 14" Jakes. I have caught more fish on the Grandmas. I think they run a little deeper and have a little bit more aggressive wobble. They also don't have rattles. That said, I still use both from time to time.
I don't have any of the 12" Slammers.....I assume you are referring to a shallow runner. I do have three of the 12" Slammer Deep Minnows and I have caught a few on that lure.
Start out with a Grandma and eventually end up with several of each......that would be my plan. |

Location: Lincoln, NE | I'll give another vote for the Custom X. How can you beat a handmade thru-wire wood lure custom painted for $10 cheaper than a 14" Jake? My cousin knocked a 14" Jake off the table and when it landed the bill snapped off. How are you supposed to smash that into rocks at 5mph? I trolled my Custom X into the rocks for 4 straight days and it took it like a champ with just a little scuffing on the bill. Plus they look so nice you want to hang them on the wall. |

| Yes the custom x will troll over 5mph. It has a huge wobble to it. Because the width of the lip is so wide it really does not blow out.

Location: North of Sweden! | I bought a 12" Custom X (second hand but looks to be basically not used at all) this saturday, and, well, if I didn't already have a wife...I'd marry that lure in a heartbeat!!! :D
any pics you see of it won't do it justice, and, in between seeing it live, and then seeing it in the water... it is just even better... crayz awesome in the water!!!
though, I have a question (yes, I realize this thread is really old, but, why not ask stuff here instead of making another) due to the huge bill on this it exerts some ridiculous force whenever you bump rocks with it, must be really tough on the lure as the leverage on this lip is big when it slams any rocks.
I have some slight chipping of the coating now behind the lip on my lure. Not much, just sort a small piece that must have snapped off due to the lip kinda "flexing" the lure around there and cracking the coating. Now, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS LURE and want to be able to catch fish on it for as long as possible, what should I use to mend this? or, is it fine? maybe mending such a small thing is pointless?
sorry for th long-winded reply and questions, but... bottom line... when you've seen the 12" Custom X in the water, if you don't fall in love then and there I don't think you like fishing... :D

| Of those 3, I'd take the Grandma everyday. The other 2 baits are good as well but I've just caught so many fish on 13" grandmas over the years someone in my boat is usually trolling one. My best success has been trolling them behind boards after dark. |
