Question for guides, and tournament fisherman, too, I guess.

Do you ever intentionally NOT catch fish while scouting? Here's my thought process: Presumably your objectives are to determine where the fish are, what they will chase or hit, and if you just find what they'll chase, what will trigger them. This may be just plain stupid, but do you think it hurts your client's chances [or your chances, if you're pre-fishing for a tournament] of catching a fish tomorrow if YOU catch it today [while pre-fishing]? I'm thinking about spots that just hold one or two fish, or maybe several but just one big one. If you catch that fish while pre-fishing, how likely is it that it eat again tomorrow?

I was just wondering if anyone just fishes for follows in order to gather as much data as possible without sticking holes in the mouths of fish you'd rather catch the next day.

Well of course, we pre-fish a minimum of 3 days before every WMT event and take all hooks off of our lures. Yeah, for real...

During a pre fish, generally if its for a few days, or maybe just one, we fish it the way we do any other day, if a fish comes up on our bait either a distance off, or right at the boat, we pull the bait away, hooks on, generally a lot of baits run totally different with hooks off, so if its the action of the bait is what they want we keep them on, and if a fish is hot, believe me shes going to dine later that day, or that night. So chances if you do pull away, and she is still out there she may not be there the next day. If were able to locate fish We like to think of it as a good area that will hold more fish, especially if our friend the bait fish are present.

I have fished with the hooks off on a couple of spots- creeks mouths- to see if there were fish there. Located a couple and brought my GF back and she got a 41". Why not while pre-fishing ?
