What are the requirements by law for safety that you need to have in your boat while on the Michigan and Canadian waters of st Clair?

IMO the strange requirements on LSC/Canada are 50' floating rope and an E99 card from customs.

Google "Coast Guard vessel inspection" and you'll get a list of what they check for.

Then Canada has other requirements and restrictions, like flare guns are considered firearms.

I think this only applies to American boats in Canadian waters I think Canadian boats require Dept. of Transport approved equipment.

In some areas aggressive police are charging you for not having paper charts even tho you have 2 chart recorders and Navionics on your phone. They are required if you are not within sight of navigation marks which I take to be bouys or shoreline. Not sure about St Clair but had a friend charged on the St Lawrence and a few on Lake Ontario.

If you launch from U.S. waters and travel to Canadian waters the flare gun is ok as long as you do not touch shore or anchor near shore.

LSC is my home water and I have been stopped by the coast guard before. All they checked for were approved life jackets, fire extinguisher, secondary horn besides boat horn. I also went through a coast guard pre season inspection at the boat ramp and they checked for the same stuff. The only extra things they checked for were flare gun and checked my lights. I didn't have a flare gun but without it at the ramp check I just didn't get my sticker. Haven't had any issues this year at all with being stopped or checked.

I take all the required safety equipment you would need on the Great Lakes
-Life Jackets
-Flare Gun/Flares Up to date
-Throwable device
-Anchor with 200' of rope
-A sound horn or some sound device (whistle)
-Flashlight/Spotlight
-Passport of crossing the border

Better to be safe than sorry.

Flare guns can be bought at any hardware/marina in Ontario. They are not considered firearms...

Geeesh!
