I'm going to get either a 300 or 400 this spring, just wondering which will be better for burning. I see the 300 takes up more line per crank but the 400 has a lower ratio with only 3" less line per turn. Will the 300 be much harder to turn with the higher ratio. Thanks for your input guys.

We'll between the two choices I'd say the 400 with 1/2 the spool filled.

If there is a better choice, I'm open to suggestions. Problem is, I need a left handed reel though.

Tbe only way to burn with a revo is with the 6:4:1 gears being paul bunyon.

To burn: saltist, trinidad, tranx with the tranx hg with a trinidad or ljv handle getting my vote. Since it has to be a lefty you would need a avet.

Ok, so I'm looking at the AVET HXJ 5/2 RAPTOR now, anything special I need to know about a non-levelwind reel?

after a day of fishing let the line out on your way to the dock and reel back in. Key is to have a tight spool, using 100lb braid will help to go back on while retrieving. Also you use your thumb to guide the line. I used a Trinidad 16 and could not keep my spool tight so I sold it and bought a tranx hg. A lot of people have no problems doing that though.

I have an SX 5.3 (mc) that I threw 10's, 13's and rubber with. Outstanding reel for the price, 31" per rotation. Durability is an issue. Sending it in this winter. Not that it failed, just not nearly as smooth as it was 2 years ago.

Cave Run is correct you are not going to burn anything with these two reels... If you can afford it and don't mind a reel the size of a Minn Kota trolling motor head get a Tranx....that will burn um...and give you some exercise at the same time. How about a Lexa or Curado with a lg power handle ?????? anyone using them?

I've got a Lexa now, and not a huge fan, durability isn't very good and it's pretty tiring. I don't think it's made for hard pulling baits.

I use the raptor 2 speed version, both used it spinnerbaits and dc10, also great for rubber

There is a tread or two about it but I would use the 400D but replace the gears with the ones from the 300D. I have just ordered the parts from shimano but have not switched out the parts yet. You get the 400 spool size with the 300 dear ratio; best of both worlds. I can give you more info on the parts needed if you would like, cost me about $30 including shipping.

Make sure to get a magged Avet (i.e., MC). I like mine, but at times still get frustrated with it. It does a great job of speed, but I see it as a "one-trick pony." I use my Toro 61's and TE 401's a whole lot more. (Actually not just a one trick reel, they are great for jigging as they were designed to be.)

AVET SX Raptor -- 2 speed allows for an awesome burner and a slow roller all in one package. Non level wind has been NO issue at all. Casts like a gun and for a country mile, never had a backlash with the "magic cast" magnetic system. So happy with this reel! The HX may be a bit of an overkill in terms of size, but the "j" version will make it less of an issue. I really like the new SXJ coming out as well.

Yeah I didn't notice the size and weight of the Hx at first when looking at the specs. Definitely a bit bigger than I anticipated.

So the axj raptor 2 speed looks pretty good, with the 6.3 ratio is it still easy to crank in a double 10 or 12?

If you mean "SXJ" it is relatively easy to pull 10s and 12s in the high gear, but in the low speed (which is faster than a Winch) it's effortless. At first, I didn't think it was actually bringing in line!!!

The SXJ and the SX is the same reel, just a more narrow spool, i don't think the SXJ Raptor is out yet? (hopefully i'm wrong)

The SX is a really small reel, around the same size as the callcutta 400D.

Go fishing for a week with a right hand reels, then you want notes the difference :P
Iv'e always used lefties but now that i used my Tranx(s) so mutch i don't really think about what i'm using, except for when I'm fishing gliders, i still prefer my lefties. but that's just a matter of practice as well.

Wouldn't it be easier to spend a few trips learning to use the other hand? I did this and it was one of the best things I've done. I have both L/R reels and cast with either arm. I switch off and it is so much better after a week of heavy casting. Try it, it's worth the initial feeling of being totally uncoordinated.

Take a look at the Shimano Curado 300ej if you want to move Bucktails at a good click at a reasonable price. I picked one up new on Ebay $60 off MSRP. A nice reel.
