Location: MN | I am not familiar with that exact model but many of the saltists didn't have spool brakes, making them more difficult to cast. Many were designed for jigging |

Location: Minneapolis, MN | I have one if the new black saltists, the 20 size, and they don't have spool brakes. I ky use mine for heavier baits or bucktails that have marabou or extra waiting, I won't throw standard cowgirls or cranks with it. |

Location: Walker, MN | I love mine for a big rubber dedicated set-up but I don't think I would want to throw big blades into the wind with it. It doesn't even have a centrifugal brake. You could try just filling up the spool 2/3 of the way other wise you might want to consider a different reel. They are bullet proof reels just not exactly a great all around muskie reel. They require a pretty educated thumb. |

Location: Georgian Bay | Practice makes perfect. I have a Saltist 40 and i used to backlash alot, I now back the adjuster way off and my thumb never leaves the spool. The trick is to not try to cast to hard more of a good hard lob. I also got real good at pulling out birdnests. |

| Sometimes, several hard hooksets, etc., will cause line to "bite" into the spool. Line twist does not help either. Cut off your leader and let all the line out off the spool behind the boat at about 4 MPH, then real steady. It's just the right pressure for the line and you will spool up without twist. Then realize you either have 100% brakes or zero cuz trying to get inbetween is about a fruitless effort. Back off the brake all the way and then cast until you educate your thumb to the reel. If it's double tens, don't cast into the breeze, you will be unhappy. The whippier tip on the Sling Blade helps in that area but you just have to practice with that reel. I still like them however. |

Location: New Hope MN | I sent my saltist 30HA to Pikemaster, and it magically came back 10X easier to cast. No idea what he did. |

| It's really more simple than that, it's NOT a casting real, it's a TROLLING reel. We have adapted the use because we like the big crank, large spool, incredible take-up which allows you to "burn" double tens with your hand hardly moving for like a hundred fifty bucks. You just have to learn to use it......or as Dirty Harry would say, "A man has to know his limitations!" |

Location: KY | Has anyone tried maging a Saltist 20? I think the striper guys have good luck with the larger saltist reels. They are going for 100+ yard casts from shore though. |

Agreed. Seemed like the harder I would try to trow a DCG the more often it would backlash. Like i said before, a simple fix is to just use a heavier or marabou bucktails. |

| Packing the spool bearings with grease helps. Also, there is a place that installs a custom magnetic brake on them for around $55.

Location: Georgian Bay | IMO the best way to remove a backlash/birdnest when using super braids is to pull hard out the front, more of a hard snap. This works about 80% of the time. If it does not work, the hard snap will create a V in the birdnest, give the V a hard pull if it pops, pull/snap out the front. Now 2% of the time the first hard snap will dig the knot deep into the spool and you will be f#$%ed. Just my 2 cents. |

| I think the easiest and best thing to do is Not Use this reel for throwing blades, this reel was clearly not designed for throwing blades, and more for jigging and trolling like someone else already indicated... My advice would be to keep this reel for trolling and jigging, and buy another reel that was designed for Casting Baits and Blades.... |

I disagree. This thing is basically a poor mans Tranx and with practice and/or the right equipment one won't have too many issues. Besides, it's a killer reel for burning blades and you're hard pressed to find a better reel for dawgs IMO. Also, spending the money on another reel may not be an option for everyone. |

Yea dropping $150-200 on a new reel and leaving this one on the shelf or using for troling is not an option i will try some of the ideas here to see if it will work better. |
