Will a plan old straight retrieve - similar to how you would reel in a crankbait - be effective this time of year?

I'm worried about overworking these style lures.

Cast. Let Sink. Reel in. Maybe impart action with short bursts of speed from the reel. No rod action.

Thoughts ?

I fished with Dennis Lappen of Musky Innovations in the fall once and he was just straight retrieving the dawg. Basically there's no wrong way to fish one, but they may want a different retrieve on different days.

There's your answer. But, I'm wondering why you are worried about over-working them? I suspect alot plastic gurus will be along after the weekend to let you know that until ice-up they continue to impart the same erratic pump and reel method. Again, there's really no way to fish one wrong as long as its in the water, just wondering what your concern is?

Hawkeye9,

I was just thinking that the fish will slowdown as the water cools - less apt to chase an erratic, darting bait - that's all.

Try different retrieves, I like the reel and rip with my magnum heli-dawgs.

Erratic and darting means struggling or dieing which means an easier meal for a fish who's metabolism is dictated by water temp. Colder the water the easier they wanna make eating. The more triggers (pulls pumps rips jerks) in your retrieve the better. Muskies can eat whenever they want down there we have to trigger them to bite. Straight cranking will work but the best way to do it is to put blades in front and in this case of the cold water season slow roll wat we call a bull dozer like u would a cowgirl
