| I bought a boat in WI and would like to know what the laws are in WI as far as if you have to put plates on your boat trailer in that state I have been told two things from two people one said you do and one said you don't, I would like to figure out what or who is right! |

Location: Madison, WI | >=3000lbs, you need plates in WI
My understanding is that other states do NOT have to respect this. So, if you are in another state that requires plates, they can nail you for not having them. |

However, what is the likelihood of that happening? Not saying you shouldn't follow the law, I just don't think it be worth getting plates if you had to travel through a state that required them. |

I wouldn't go through Illinois tho...
also double10, regardless of what wisconsin requires or does not require, it sounds like you are not a wisconsin resident? (forgive me if im wrong, but you said "in that state" referring to wisconsin) So i'd just plan on putting plates on her when u get back home

They cannot nail you for being legal in your state of residence. The trailer must comply with the regulations in the state it is kept. If you're legal in WI, you cannot be ticketed in IL, MN, IN, AK, ME, or wherever you may roam.
This also means that if you reside in WI, but keep your boat/trailer in MN it must follow MN regulations (and vice versa - same thing for boats which is why there are a bunch of IL owned boats w/ WI registration stickers).
Here's a link to trailer registration fees (under 3000lb is optional on the chart)

Location: Aurora IL | Correct, also keep in mind that you will need title to the trailer if you need to get plates in your home state or you will have to do a create a title and then pay taxes on the trailer again to get plates (Illinois). Bill |
