Mr Musky I agree!! I remember 20 years ago my Dad and I would go on a late Oct. weekend and people would look at us crazy. Now, you see so many boats even into November.

Yep! After labor day only the diehards would be out. Not anymore, my wife watched a guy on the bay trolling for skis yesterday stuff a nice musky into an old school tiny blue mesh walleye net and onto the floor it went.

Yeah Steve, no disrespect but 250,000 seems like a reasonable number with the musky range being rather small and the dedication this sport takes to be successful.

There are muskie from Washington State to Quebec, north and south, so I am guessing there are quite a few. I am not sure what "dedication" it takes. You just need a rod and reel for the most part, many of us take it to a higher level no doubt. BR

ToddM - You can't count BenR, he sometimes fishes with a flyrod and even a cane pole! Opps, I guess I'm out too.... So, its got to be 362,112.73

Actually, I think this is one of those marketing research post's - # of boats on the water - bwaaaaaaaaaaa! That makes absolutely no sense.

Have fun!

I have heard through Muskies INC that the number of Musky anglers for MN alone is close to 100,000. I would think WI is at or above that... this number is not including Canada, and all of the other states that that give you the opportunity to catch one as well.

So my official answer is... A LOT

We've got 6 MI Chapters within about an hour of each other down here, and we don't have more than a handful of lakes in the area that even have a population of muskies. I really couldn't guess at a number, but I'd say it's a LOT more than any of us think.

I did a project on this back in school, I asked muskies inc for their input and this is what i got.
"We have 7000 active members, data base holds 35,000 names from over the
years The number I have heard is in the neighborhood of 800,000 nationwide
Muskie Fisherman"

Hope this helps

I base the numbers on the actual adjusted 'absolute unique users' numbers visiting here in any one year. So 250,000 is way short of reality.

The WDNR estimates approx 480,000 people in WI who fish for muskies: http://dnr.wi.gov/news/weekly/article_lookup.asp?id=2343

Nationwide and including Canada, I'd think the total number is probably >1,000,000

There is simply no way of knowing.

You have to realize that there is a significant number of Muskie anglers who don't use the internet for muskie forum chat rooms, that don't join muskie clubs or organizations, etc, etc. There is no exact Census for this kind of thing.

It's kind of like trying to track and know the exact number of illegals within the United States borders...there is no real way of knowing exactly. The numbers are far larger than anyone thinks or can report on paper. Not all of them come crawling out of the wood-work to raise their hand to let themselves be known to make sure they're counted. It's kind of like trying to figure out what the largest/longest/heaviest fish has ever been caught within a specific lake...no way of knowing as I'm positive there's some monster fish caught out there that never see nor hear the light of day because most anglers don't care to share their experiences of their catches with the masses on the internet....

It's just safe to say there is a lot of people out there that fish for muskies.

Do you count the 2 guys I met Fri. coming off the lake who had put 25 lb. mono on their spinning reels along with their generic red and white spoons.
Their comment was " we heard this was a good musky lake but we were out for almost 3 hours and didn't catch any"

If you include Canada and the USA I bet you have 100,000 die hards fishing muskies 30 days or more a year Add in another 900,000 part timers who fish sometimes muskies and other times salmon, bass, walleye.

Even at 1 million its 1 for every 350 people (anyone who fishes muskie once in awhile) and 1 for every 3,500 for serious anglers. USA and Canada population.

Probably has peaked and don't expect muskies to become more popular than now unless they stock them in California and Texas heavily.

In my opinion your numbers seem a good guy sketchy.

If there were that many die hards you would think..........
- shows would be more active
- lure companies would be making more money
- there would be more Muskies Inc. members
etc.

Even the most populated areas do not have many muskie fishing club members.

Is there anything to back these numbers up?

I would start counting the number of unique hits the website receives and dividing it by half also. A lot of people check the website at home, work, and by phone and each count as a unique visitor. Not a good way to get an accurate number of how many muskie fishermen visit the website.

The above comments are to try and spark more discussion.

How do you explain the number of folks in my area who fish for muskies? We've got 300 in our chapter alone. 6 other chapters in the area. I fish for them, my girlfriend fishes for them, her brother, my next door neighbor, his father in law, my uncle, my cousins, my clients, my vendors... The gym where Samantha trains regularly has Musky Hunter playing on the TV on Saturday mornings. Her Cable guy is a musky angler. Our furnace guy is a musky angler. This past weekend I found a Larry Dahlberg musky lure making kit at one of our local toy stores. I see Rollie and Helens/Musky Hunter/MI decals on trucks around here on a weekly basis. I see musky license plates, musky boats, musky EVERYTHING. And this is an area where the closest musky fishing is over an hour away. Suburban sprawl, DuPage county... Nothing about this area lends itself to musky angling, but it seems there are musky anglers everywhere you look.

I have been fishing for muskies all my life and majority of my relatives do as well.
None of us subscribe to any muskie magazine or attend any fishing shows in past 10 years. None of us are in muskies inc. or any other muskie club. Majority of muskie fishing don't go to shows, buy magazines, and are not in muskie clubs.

There are more than a thousand lakes with muskies and every weekend most lakes with these muskies have at least 10 die hards going after them. Then add in the big lakes like G-Bay and St. Clair etc and you can have 1,000 on a weekend.

100,000 people fishing 30 days a year for a muskie is really not a lot. By the way I have caught tiger muskies in Ukraine and do we add the Russians to the list. They grow big there to but no catch and release since they don't reproduce.

Does anyone know how many lakes in the world have muskies - its a lot.

Already adjusted. Also adjusted for bot traffic, etc. We are quite aware of the number of absolute unique visitors here.

There are approximately 80,000 who target musky in WI every year. That is just ONE state. I have done some marketing research (USA and Canada) and the number is much higher than most would think. Now this is a person that fishes for musky at least one time (or more) a year. Most here are the 1%ers of musky fishing... Most here will fish for musky more in one day than the average guys will in an entire year. For my market research it was "who is buying musky tackle and where are they". Many more than you would think....

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service publishes a National Survey on Hunting, Fishing and Wildlife-Associated Recreation, about every five years, the most recent stated that 27 million people fish freshwater not including the great lakes, the great lakes are another 1.7 million. Then use Southwick's angler survey and you get 4 million people fish for pickerel, pike and muskie, i don't know what % of those people don't fish musky, and i do not know how many people were surveyed and where the people are surveyed are from so the numbers could be skewed

Bwaaaaaaaaaaaa! Now he or she has to own a muskie rod & reel? LOL I caught my first 50" on a Bill Dance bass rod and Shimano Curado 200 w/ 17lb mono, oh yeah, I was targeting them, I was'nt fishing for bass either! I also hand landed the fish at boatside. I also use saltwater gear for muskies. What's next, it only counts if you own a real musky net or boat? If you're targeting them, its called muskie fishing in my book.

I usually only get to fish for muskies for ~ 1 week every year in Canada, and randomly locally. I can show you fish in Canada that will either scare the crap out of you or make you cry! Nope, I'm not a muskie fisherman. Just don't tell my wife that, she'll be wondering what I've been up too!

Have fun!

If a person targets muskies at all, they fish muskies. One trip a year is all some can get out of work and life.

So over 3 million people (almost 4 million) have fished for pickerel, pike, and muskie during the span of that survey. Is it safe to say the United States has over a million Muskie anglers? Tackle companies must be getting rich!

Yes, it is safe to say that. Rich? Probably not, but the business has expanded like a forest fire over the last decade.

Let's look at who builds rods for Muskies and Pike.
Abu
Fenwick
GLoomis
Daiwa
Shimano
St. Croix
Tackle Industries
Okuma
Gander Mountain
Bass Pro Shops
Tica
Musky Innovations
Cabelas
And a number of others.

Muskie has been the fastest growing fresh water segment for a number of years.

On line retailers are popping up like crazy. The concrete and glass retailers are growing in numbers. Advertising dollars have increased accordingly.

That doesn't happen with a few thousand possible sales a year.

TOO MANY!!!! You guys are cuttin into my action. For me, I can explain it....its a disease.... that causes masocistic tendencies. Like spending all your extra money on expensive equipment, beating yourself half to death using the equipment... all to catch a stupid fish that you take a picture of, then release. Face it, most 6 years olds with a Snoopy rod, danglin a worm from it, will out fish you 20 to 1 in numbers. And if they keep them bluegills and eat'em, nobody's beatin you up when you post the picture and say that you ate'm.

a LOT more bass guys All of my available product development budget over the next 3 years will be going towards developing new bass and walleye lures and rods. Got about 100 new SKUs coming out in Spring of 2014 just for bass. Not an exact science here but for every 1 musky rod or lure I sell I could sell 10+ into the bass market if not 20+. Guess I will see soon... Just starting to look at the market data for the bass and walleye markets. Its big to say the least...
