A buddy and I are headed up to the big water this Sunday to see if we can't snag into a beast. Problem is, neither of us has ever fished Mille Lacs. Can anyone offer up some pointers as to what we should be fishing this time of year (structure, lures, etc.)? The plan is to launch somewhere on the south side of the lake and start hitting spots. From there is all a guess...

On a similar note, do most of you typically fish a shot super hard before heading to the next, our do you "run and gun" a bunch of spots looking for active fish?

Thanks for the help!

I don't fish it much, but this time of year you will probably want to focus on the rocks. Try the deep edge where the rock changes to sand, gravel, mud, etc.... and also up on top. I would run and gun until you start moving fish and then pick those areas apart more thoroughly a peak feeding windows (moonrise/set) etc...

Although I would start fishing rock, I wouldn't ignore weeds if you aren't finding them. Also, don't hesitate to find some of the rocky shoreline areas.

Good luck - it can be frustrating out there, but on any given cast you COULD get the fish of a lifetime.

I would head to the SE end of the lake and fish the many rock reefs. Might want to launch out of a resort...I like Buzzie's out of Mac Twin bay. I have heard the DNR has already pulled the buoy's so be careful to not bang your prop.

malone island would be a good start theres a deep hole and a huge weed flat just north of the island. hawkbill and big piont is another good one. and hennipin island could be a sleeper. gps or a good lake master paper map is a must. good luck

Thanks for the info everyone. We're planning on heading out of Father Hennepin and we'll go from there. Anyone know what lures they've been checking out lately? Generally we throw dawgs, blades, and suicks...

Just got home from a long day on the water. It's unfortunate, but I think they may have taken every single muskie out of that lake and put it somewhere else.

Spent the day on the SE side casting weeds, reefs, humps, islands, reeds, and every other type of structure we could find. Threw what seemed like every bait in the box and had absolutely no sign of muskie life. After about 11 hours of casting at nothing we let the frustration win and drove back home. Couldn't have asked for better weather for being outside in the fall. I'm not sure the fish saw it quite the same.

I'm peeed, let down, frustrated, and can't wait to get back up there and give it a go again. Thanks for the help on spots to check out. Looked like we were in the right territory all day.

Don't get discouraged. The Big Pond is frustrating due to so many places for them to roam. It is def not a numbers lake. Thankfully you got to spend a day on it when the weather was good. My son and I are heading up there later in the week and are prepared for 29 degree weather and winds out of the north. We have fished with some great guides on the lake and had the entire boat skunked in good conditions. The lake can humble good sticks frequently.

About 43 in isle bay. Maybe a degree or two difference depending on location in the southeast corner of the lake.

Nice fish! You catch that yesterday? I was out there yesterday and had most of my action in the morning. A lot of people out fishing.
