Thinking of getting a boga grip or the new Rapala one? Thoughts/comments/recommendations? I am looking for a safe release tool!

Tahoe...

Someone brought this up in one of my seminars about a month ago..had a good discussion with the group..

Here's what is viewed as benefits:

No net to wipe slime off the fish. ( A good net with a coated bag is also very fish slime friendly)
You can get a good hold/control of fish.

Here's what I see as potential concerns:

Verticle hold on fish is more suseptable to happen, I believe that a horizontal hold is best for the fish. Just my opinion.
Depending on how the fish is hooked a boga may not be a good choice.
Fish may wind up on the carpet/floor of boat, unintentionally of course, but I see this as more likely to happen with a boga. I think you have better control with a "proper" fish friendly gill hold.

Some things to consider:

A Boga is only a "tool" in your arsenal, it can not totally replace a good quality net like the Frabill Big Game series.

I think they have merit on smaller fish say, less than 40".

Buy a good one...not the $39 one. The Boga's cost about $100+.

To answer a potential question..I have used a boga and didn't care for it for Musky. I did like it for smaller fish like Bass as opposed to lipping them with crankbaits in their mouth.

Good luck with this...above all, be safe, for your's and the fishes sake.

Mark H. said it, get a good one if you're going to get one. The $40 Berkley one can't handle big fish, but good for pickerel and walleye. I've seen the cheap one in action and the jaws can bend on a 36"fish or bigger. The fish falls off and it can bust out a row of teeth when it happens. That's probably why they came out with a different design. I've heard nothing but good about the Boga, anyone try the new Normark one?

They have it on Cabela's but it doesn't look as stout as the Boga.

Zach,

do you use a boga for "eyes"..? I'm sure in tourny's you have a long handled net but I mean when your just out fishing..?

I actually don't have mine anymore and was thinking of looking at the Normark (cuz I agree with you on the Berkley) for when I'm out fishing for Bass or eye's...?

Thanks...

I don't know about Zach but I use one to handle those mid-size toothy critters. It makes it easy to get a hold of the fish, take it out of the net, or hand it off to the one who caught it for the release(then I can get back to fishing).

I do use a boga copy. It is the berkly, but I've never had problems with it. I never hold the fish verticly with it, or even hold them with it outside of the water. I only use it when unhooking the fish. One thing I do suggest is to never use it for bass. I tried that onces and it really ripped the bottom part of its mouth up badly. I mean there was a huge hole. It won't kill it I'm sure, but will make it harder to eat.

Buy the Boga. it is the best built fishing product that I have ever owned. You need to put a rope on it and tie it to your boat. Otherwise your hundred bucks will end up on the bottom of the lake. Musky39

keep away from the berkley, it doesn't swivel and can tear up the fishes jaw. I've noticed alot of fish have a tendency to roll when you clamp it on their jaw.

M39 is right, no substitute for quality! I would think the Normark would be better than the Berk., as they generally have good stuff, but the Boga is great; use it on bluefish/rockfish w/ no probs....
