One lure I have not used much on my resevoir here is the spinner bait. I have been thinking about it more, and think that some of the times I'm having trouble hooking up immediately postspawn may be because I'm not getting my lures in their "face". i'd like you guys to explain your favorite spinner baits for ultra dark/diry water, and your post spawn tactics with them. Do you like to count them down a bit before the retreive, or just use a lift and fall technique, or both or neither. I plan to use them till they become more of a confidence lure for me this year!!

Reef Hawg, great question, I too would like to pick up some pointers. This is a very under used pattern on the waters I fish. Slow rolling new weed growth, weed edges and even breaks is what I would like to do more of.
What type of spinnerbaits work the best in the weeds, what style spinnerbaits help keep the blades from picking up weeds. Swimming heads seem to work the best for me, keeping the blades free of weeds is my problem. Anything new out that cuts the weeds?

i am no where near an expert on this subject, but here is what I use! A single bladed, shorter armed spinner with a round-nose bullet head is an excellent bait for all the crapola type structures(weeds, rocks, wood, stumps)and works dual purpose for vertical helicoptering and also for craweling along the bottom for post-turnover fish. if I am looking to achive speed and higher riding I go to the double blades with the longer arms! I could be doing it all wrong but it has been working. On a side note though this bait has had less then good fish holding abilities for me after hook-up,guess its just me! Handy

Hey Mike,
Spinnerbaits are one of the most effective presentations, in cold water situations. I use them when
fishing over rocks as well as in the weeds, with great success.

Speed, more than color or style, is what puts fish in the boat. I very rarely change blades or colors to effect strikes, I just change the speed of my retrieve.

Terry there are areas that are weed choked that are holding fish, I want to try to target these fish but have trouble finding a bait to use. The old river channel on this lake has lots of open spots along with lots and lots of weeds. 10 to 12 foot of water, what would you use to dig out these fish? Lots of under fished water because of this in ability to get baits in their faces. Casting and trolling has produced but still looking for the correct spinnerbait to use, need to work down 4 to 7 foot through the slop if possible. I want to target this area during the day, say mid day after I finish with my other spots. I think this is a sleeper pattern that needs to be checked out more. Any ideas welcome. Thanks, Mike.

Check out the ERC Pearson Grinders at Guides Choice or Pastikas booth this weekend at the Milwaukee show. They come in 4 sizes (1, 1.5, 2, 3oz.) and were designed to do exactly what you want.

Mike:

I discovered I like fishing sloppy or skinny water this year. I started working some areas that were being overlooked on some local water that gets pounded. They were all very weed choked and very difficult to work with almost every bait. I tried puting a giant mogambo tail on a Voo Doo spinner bait and found some great fish. I also removed the willow blades and replaced them with one No. 7 colorado. The technique that worked was to allow the bait to fall into the pockets by retreiving it very slowly with a pull and drop motion. Occassionally the bait would hang up in the weeds and I would just give it a firm snap to break it free. Not surprisingly everytime I hooked up a fish was immediately after snapping the bait to free the weeds.

Reef Hawg,

Drop me an e-mail - [email protected]. I'll send you a few spinnerbaits to try. Also see Kolar Bait & Tackle at the Milwaukee Show. Rob will have some of our bucktail spinnerbaits.

The best slop spinnerbait for me has been the silicone skirt type spinnerbait. Although some guys like the colorado blades and others the willow, both have their own place. For cabbage I like the willow. You can really feel it banging the stalks. For thicker milfoil or coontail, I like the colorado for ripping and exploding through the thick stuff. But it's also what you are confident in. Some might disagree but in the end if it works for you than it works for you.

Again drop me a line and I'll send a few baits your way to try. You never know. "Lukie" (above) banged 7 fish in 5 days on spinnerbaits this summer in the slop. Rich Gallagher (Big Goomba Guide Service - MuskieFIRST Pro-Staff) had great success with spinnerbaits here in Illinois and in Canada. They are my favorite spring, summer and fall. Look forward to hearing from you.

This is, in my opinion, the best time to use spinners! As already stated, the rip off of weeds produces strikes, and, changing speed is important. I like, to almost jig the bucktail, a few times in the retrieve during the very early season.

I use Violent Strike Spinnerbaits quite a bit early in the year in Wisconsin. Some lakes seem to be better suited for the baits, like Thompson here in Rhinelander.

Early in the spring, I use the smaller pike sized VS models. By June, I have moved up to the magnum, mostly because early I am targeting Pike before muskie season opens. I don't think there IS a better early spring pike lure out there than a spinnerbait.

Hi All,
I have to agree with Steve, there
isn't a more effective bait in the box for post spawn pike or muskie.
When fishing the real thick stuff I lose the trailer hook, and Texas rig a grub over the exposed hook.

This really cuts down on the hang ups and the hooking percentage is still very good.
It helps to give the bait to the fish, (much like you would with a
topwater) and then stick um hard!

I don't know how I missed this one the first time around but here goes.

I like to fish weeds a lot from opener untill they start to die off in September. The best weedless spinner baits I use are made with double bucktail with double colorado and bullet head with single saltwater hook. Now I don't like to plow through the weeds with these baits but like to pass them over the weeds in any depth up to 12 feet or so. I believe the thumping of the colorados will bring the fish up to eat them all the time and my spinnerbaits barely ever go deeper then 1 foot untill end of August. Now this is for casting and trolling, I like to to nick the side or tops of the weeds here and there as it seems to attract the big girls from the cover. Once you get a hit set hard and hold your rod high and crank, that should help keeping the line tight and not lose as many fish.

The fish at the Cave have not yet spawned out yet, and Crash, Justin, and Tony all advised using a spinnerbait as an important part of the arsenal right now.
