| I fish out of a crestliner 1650 fishhawk and am wanting to put a kicker motor on it. We are going to be fishing a few small lakes that are 9.9 only lakes and don't want to kill our trolling motor. My question is would a 5hp four stroke do a decent job of moving this boat? We found a good deal on a five hp and did not want to pull the trigger if it would not move the boat at least good enough to do some light trolling.
Thanks in advance for the help. |

| I had a 4hp on my old 14 foot monark. This boat wasn't a bare bones boat, casting deck front and rear, full ply wood floor, side console, 40hp main motor, 10 gallon tank and two batteries (group 27 and group 31) bow mount TM. 65 inch beam, A good size 14' boat the 4hp pushed me and my fishing partner 5mph all day long.
I know your fish hawk is bigger and weighs more, but what I was giving something to compare to. If your cool at going 5mph +- I think that's doable with the 5hp. |

We got a 4hp 4stroke yamaha, runs well moves well. my only complaint with the 1 cylinder outboards is they seem to be a lot louder and dont idle quite as well as the 2 cylinder models. I'd be confident to say you would move fast enough though.
if the one you looked at is used, you could potentially ask them to test it out before you buy it to see it run and what have you, and no better place to test it than on your transom. |

I would say the 5hp would do just fine. I have always felt that when it comes to kickers, the 16 footers weighing up to 700 pounds work well with 6hp, the bigger 16 - 18 footers up to 1200 lbs or so an 8hp, and above that, a 9.9...
I would tend to agree that the one cylinder motors will be a little louder, but if it is a good deal, I'd say go for it.
