| The big ones always seem to get away somehow or just swim by sticking out on either side of my boat!
How big was the biggest fish you've had follow or come unhooked? What lake was it in?

Location: Almond, WI | 56" upper 40lbs. Grabbed a sucker and the hooks didn't bite. It happens. Lake will remain nameless, but I will say it was in MN. I caught a 52.75x24.25 (over 38lbs by the formula) that same day and that big one dwarfed it.

| Several, up to about 54"... One hit going away from me on the straightaway. Couldn't see the fish in the glare, never felt the fish, never set the hook. When the guy in the back watches the fish eat and says "you got her!!" set the hook.
One hit out on a cast and swam right at me while I reeled like an idiot trying to catch up. Raised what we think was the same fish later on. It was big.
Low 50's fish I raised 13 times on everything you could imagine. Wouldn't eat.
Big yellow bastard that was the biggest I have ever seen. Coming to eat. Boat partner freaked out and scared it away.
One that I fought to the boat and thought was ready for the net because it was just sitting there. It was ready for one more good run, and that's all it took.
One that came out from under the boat, and literally scared my figure 8 skills right out of me.
The others? Some of them could have been 50. Never got a good look at most of them.
Best one ever is still a dink fish I missed a few years ago. First cast of the day. Saw the fish hit, felt the fish hit. Set the hook with all the strength and determination you'd expect from a 95 year old woman. Nobody said anything, so after a cast or two I said: "you guys didn't see that, did 'ya?"
"I didn't wanna say anything. I'm embarrassed you have you in my boat!"
"Yeah, I saw it. That was pretty p--- poor!"
"Maybe you ought to take up SHUFFLEBOARD..."
"or BINGO"
"After that fish? I think I ought to go home and knit some potholders, man!"
"you might hurt yourself..."
We laughed about that fish all day long... We STILL laugh about that fish!
It went on all day, deservedly so. And every comment was worse than the last.

Location: Chisholm, MN | I've lost two 50s this year on hogwobblers. One was this morning.... Not super tankers though. This morning, the one ate out of nowhere 10 feet from the tip of my rod. I could see she only had one hook in her nose so I had little hope from the beginning. Pulled her around the front of the boat and she came off. Pretty depressing.
I've seen 2 fish that I believe to be 55ish. One on mille lacs that followed a jackpot.
Biggest one i've lost? Probably 54ish. It was the morning after fishing all night. I had stuck 3 up to 50 so I was pretty satisfied with life at the moment. Then the beast ate.... She about ripped the rod out of my hands but I still never got hooks into her. The guy I was with who has handled many huge fish said that it was a 40 pounder. Heartbreaking...
I've lost more 50's than I have caught |

Location: Minnesota Metro | I'm lucky enough that I can say I've landed the biggest fish I've ever hooked at 47 inches. Granted its not real big compared to most people, but I'm proud of it.
That being said I raised an easy 4 footer 3 times on the Manitou this year with its nose right on my 13 inch grandma, but couldn't get it to eat. |

Location: Bemidji, Lake Vermilion | Mid 50's and approaching 30in girth from the looks we had of her. Couldn't move when on the surface, just kind of slowly wiggle. Trolling in November. After one of her slow wiggles on the surface she went down and came straight at the boat and I couldn't keep up, you know the rest from there... |

Location: Cottage Grove, WI | Have never really told this story as it still hurts when I think about it. Was fishing Wisconsin river in Kayak when I hooked one that would easily be 52". I was using a Big Game Twitch bait and this fish tried everything to get free. Rolled up in line about 10 times, then thrashed with his mouth open right at the kayak, jumped out of the water and still the hooks held.
I had the fish right at the kayak and was just holding her in place and trying to figure out how to get her in the net. By net wasn't the biggest so I laid my rod down and tried to get her in going tail first ( I know, I know) but net was small and was afraid the hooks would get caught going in head first. Anyways got her almost all the way in and she flipped her tail and went back out. When I had laid my rod down the line was under third guide down from the top,and when she went out she broke that guide off and then the line broke when it hit the next guide toward the top. Still get sick when I think about it. |

| Had my new xxh rod I bought just for throwing LB'ers break (shatter more like it) on a fish on Vermilion. Tossing a dawg, I'm within bout 12' of the boat, I see it come up from underneath it, (like the poster from Jaws) mouth wide open, just absolutely crushes my LB'er, I set the hook (hard as hell) and she barely moved... that's when she realized that she was hooked... all hell broke loose and my rod wasn't up to the task (rod shall remain nameless) sounded like a gunshot when it snapped. 4-5 head shakes later, she shook the bait. My partner was freakin out and didn't realize my rod had snapped until he saw the reel in my hand and the rest of the rod in the water. He asked me how big the fish was (he saw her and knew how big she was) I said 50", 10 minutes later he said "that fish was waaaaaay over 50" and I said " shuuuuuuut up!"

| I lost a very big fish on st Clair two weeks ago. Easily 52 but that is being conservative. Hooked her on the turn and she just wallowed as she was so fat. She was barely hooked in the lower jaw. Just one hook. Tried to net her twice and had her mostly in the net both times. And then she was gone. I haven't yet caught a 50 and my buddies kept saying I was overdue and that whn I did it would be a giant. Well they were almost right. It was the second giant I lost this summer. The other was a fish I hunted for three years and she was a big fish for the lake I was on and over 50 for sure. She just jumped and threw my lure. I was so wounded by the second loss that I contemplated packing this crazy $&? in. But I am far too sick and addicted at this point.

| Mille Lacs: Had a 52-53 hit a topwater and come straight at the boat. I couldn't keep up and she was gone Lake X MN: 55-56 on a sucker. The sucker rig failed. That one still haughts me because I saw the fish before I set the hook. I have lost several other low 50's because they just get off sometimes. Finally there is this fish. Got her on GB 5 years ago. Took a few quick pics and went to measure her in the water with the floating stick ruler. Before we could get a good measurment she was gone. Anyone care to guess? I think 52-53. Thanks for letting me post. This is almost like theropy.
How do I attach a photo? |

| I lost a few fish, in the low to mid 50's, in the last four years.
Had fish up to 55" follow to the boat. My partner caught one of those. It was 55 inches. I got to net it, and take photos.
I guess that's why we are addicted to these creatures! |

Location: tHe LaKe Of PrIoR, mN | I had a 52 in the net last fall while fishing with a first timer... while working on pulling the hooks I hear the sucker rod click a few times then the sound of line ripping through water as the sucker doubled back to the boat running for its life they both came shooting out from under the boat within inches of the 52 in the bag the fish was ON the sucker and was a BEAST at least 4 inches bigger than the one we hooked up waited for the clicker to go never did not sure how the sucker got away still have dreams of hooking up with that one |

| Does this count as a get-away? One morning after pulling an all nighter I set out for sunrise. I was on one of my favorite spots sitting out DEEP casting my big cisco weagle towards the edge of the bar's weedbed and on the 4th retrieve the weagle was about 40 feet from the boat when I heard the biggest "suck" noise I've ever heard on the water from a fish...WHATEVER IT WAS...the fish blew the bait out of the water and burned a memory in my brain. The lunge's mouth was open bigger than I've seen and it remind me of shark jaws, the bait was sideways and could have fit in the fishes mouth, sideways! It all happened so fast but nonetheless that image is burned into my brain. She had to be pushing 54" and it was out on Black. I saw the entire fish...man I wish I could draw! She was huge, one hell of an Oneida County trophy class fish |

| A friend and I were fishing out of a canoe for bass and pike. As we worked the shallow water of the Potato River we slid alongside a muskie sitting next to a weed patch. It didn't move and we were able to hold our canoe paddle next to it, and the fish was slightly shorter than the paddle. When we got home we measured the paddle and it was 60" long, so we figured it as a 59" muskie.

Location: Maple Grove, MN | I hooked and lost the largest Muskie I ever saw. I have no idea how long that fish was, but she is much larger than any Muskie I've ever seen. I've been a little obsessed with catching that one the last few years and have seen her many times. Having fished Tarpon and seeing 5 foot fish up close, I am pretty sure she isn't 60 inches - probably between 56 and 58. Definitely not a world record, but might by a MN record late in the fall. |

| I am always amazed at the posts about the big ones that got away. Wow. I am anal about re-tying my lines. I get a kink on a steel leader and I toss it. I get a nick on a flourocarbon and throw it. I re-spool frequently whether it is needed or not. I never lock my drag down.
Maybe that is why I have caught the 3 biggest fish I have ever seen and never lost a big one yet. But I am sure it will happen someday. |

It happens if you fish enough, had a montser 4 and a half footer that was a foot thick hit my top water dive under the boat and bust my 8'6" xh gander rod just below the first guide above the grip. The fish pulled a little more line frim my half busted rod and jumped and shook off.I was heartbroken and in disbelief. That was about the 3-4 cast that mornin on a little river float trip where I usually only bring one rod, good thing I had 2 that day but I didn't feel like fishing much after that. Also had a nite that I caught a 50" and had monster, that looked 6-8 inches bigger, rip the screw eye out of a lindy big m and swam away!! Hurts to think of em |

| I dont post on here a whole lot, but Im sick, bored, and cant fish this weekend. maybe someone will get a kick out of this story.
August 6th of last year. We were on fish really heavy. I had the date set up to fish with my old college roommate who had never muskie fished before. The evening of the 5th I saw,not follow, a very large 55-57 incher sitting up ultra shallow on gravel a cast from a pile of good weeds wed been banging fish out of. I say with confidence it was that big because we had caught a 54 2 days before and this was noticeably bigger.
Tony, my old roommate got there late the night of the 5th, we had a few beers and went to bed. Stopped at holiday on the way to the lake and Tony filled up his coffee mug, and I bought 2 12 packs of dew. Launched the boat, stayed up near the access and went thru basic casting, figure 8s, retrieves, etc for a few minutes quick before we motored up. We went to that spot of course right as the sun was hitting the trees. 17 mph wind out of the north and had the boat pointing straight into it. Not 20 casts into the morning, That fish waked up behind my topwater...sped up, slowed down, game over. Fish curled up over it and ate it. I look at Tony and he is casually reeling in his bait. I said "tony, get the bag" He said ok and continued slowly reeling. I yelled 'tony drop your ####### rod and get the net' By this time the fish is boatside and wallowing 5 feet away. The boat had turned sideways with the wind and me not being on the trolling motor. I said net in the water, hopped down into the tub of the boat and 'slap shotted' the fishes head towards the net. Well right as I was pulling the fish to the bag, a big wave hit and Tony fell over on the front deck of the boat, net in the air. Ugh. The fish went under the boat, my rod is horseshoed and is scrapping on the gravel. The fish is jumping like a dolphin on the other side of the boat. I trim the big motor up with my toes, get the rod around the backside of the boat and start fighting the fish again. Tony grabs the net and as the fish is coming back it cartwheels towards the boat and throws the hook.
I grabbed Tonys coffee cup, slammed it on a lakewood and shattered it. Still have a scar where the plastic cut my finger. Grabbed the 2 12 packs of dew and flung em in the lake. Tony was a state champion wrestler and a tough guy...Ive never seen him afraid other than that moment! Ha, I said reel in your line. We sat in front of a liq store till it opened, then I went and sat in the yard drinking the rest of the day. Got some 54.5s but never a bumped 55. Still chasing a dub nickel. |

How big are those fish?
Mid 50s with some girth. I have had about a 1000 fish in the boat through the years. I have witnessed three over 50s lost on leader failures by boat partners. I sure hope I don't lose a real big one, but it is likely to happen I am sure. My point is I know of several heartbreak stories that could've been avoided by changing leaders and line often. I am also not a big fan of a locked drag as I have seen fish in the net with broken or bent hooks from hanging on the net. Having the gear tuned and in proper working order helps a lot. |

Location: Minnesota | Super long and fat - pushing 60 but I have no way of knowing for sure. It was just cruising along 2 feet down and swam right by the boat. I threw a lure in front of it but it didn't even care. A buddy of mine was trying to decide what to throw at it and I told him "we don't have what she wants. It would be like you and I walking across a parking lot and seeing a french fry on the ground - we wouldn't eat it either" I just sat there and did nothing for a minute or two.
An old-timer was telling me that a pike spearer stuck a 60" musky that next winter in the same general area of the lake and ditched it out in a swamp. He didn't know anything of my story until after he told me - I still don't know if he was just telling fish stories or if it really happened. |
