Location: Minneapolis, MN | I am traveling to St. John US Virgin Islands in March and was wondering what fishing equipment I should bring? My friend, who I am visiting, told me to bring a Muskie setup and I should be fine. I have a C5 w/50# Tuffline and wonder if can handle the saltwater? I used to have a Pinnacle Vision (poor quality to begin with) that I brought to Alaska a couple of years ago and pretty much destroyed it in the salt water. I thought I remember a guy at Thorne Bros. telling me that the Shimano Catala was designed for salt water but I am not sure about the Abu. It’s my favorite reel and obviously don’t want to ruin it.
I will be doing some deep sea fishing but mostly I’ll be wading and casting around the island. Does anyone have any recommendations for surf fishing in the Caribbean? Would a big spinning reel be a better choice? What lures should I buy, should I try some Muskie lures? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Your set-up will work just fine for blue water applications. The most important thing to remember is to rinse your rig with fresh running water. I use a hose with either a fine spray or an unpressurized stream, as you don't want to force feed your reel. Then spray the whole reel with WD40 to dissipate the salt crystils. These are the same steps taken to even the Penn Internationals that are used in big game, offshore trolling. I'm not sure what species will be running at that time, but be sure your drag is in tip-top shape, those salties tend to peel out some line at times.

| My friend had a 40 lb tuna completly melt the drag in his C5. It was so cool. We were both fighting fish when I heard him say, "UUHH Houston, we have a problem." He managed to get the fish in my employing the old burn your thumb method of drag use.
