New guy and not too experienced. I fish the Potomac out of Williamsport and Shepherdstown. I've been hitting deeper areas (10-15 ft.) mostly with crankbaits. I haven't been able to locate any fish (with the exception of one that swam by in the shallows at the opening to a creek). Water temperature is around 77 degrees. Am I on the right track with where I'm fishing/what I'm fishing with? Also I was wondering how much of a difference there is between tigers and pure musky, because there is supposedly both in the river (but tigers seem to be more dominant).

If anyone can give me some advice it would be greatly appreciated, after five trips (both day and night) I've had no luck. And if there is anyone familiar with the Potomac, some advice on locations would be helpful (dam 5, vs. williamsport, vs. dam 4 on down to shepherdstown....not sure where the better areas are).

I'm also interested in any advice for fishing areas around Western Maryland.

There are several guides out that way, look them up. They will shorten your learning curve immensely.

K- I posted in your other thread.
Here's my #1 tip for anyone looking at fishing new water or even water you think you know. Learn to use satellite technology to help you narrow the potential spots you want to fish.

I'd fish this spot.

Why? The creek outlet and the bridge structure's. They offer ambush oportunities for the larger predator's like muskies and pike.

Here's another one.

Why fish below the dam structure? Much higher disolved oxygen, current breaks and smaller forage species are trapped by the dam. The water also is probably a little cooler too- because of evaporation caused by the same turbulance that increases the oxygen levels. If there are muskies in this river section they will be here.

oops! Maybe I gave away someone's hot spots.

Have fun!

Here's another tool I use for fishing.

The best teacher is time on the water..... if you hire a guide, figure out what you want the guide to teach you and communicate that to the guide. I hired Howie Meyer because I wanted to understand late season big muskies and how to target them. Howie's late season spot's are still Howie's. But I now understand why they were there and how to target them.

Have fun!
