Whats your opinion on night fishing and if so with what baits and when?

Jason,

I have caught some muskies late at night on the Chip, but not the numbers I expect, or with any consistency. When I was younger (and dumber!) I fished all night several times. Yet the latest I've boated a musky on the Chip was just after midnight.

We generally fish the evenings and the first hour of dark, but after that the action is spotty. I believe it's because of the Chip's dark water.

The best evening (and first dark) fishing is usually during the warm water periods, Mid-June to Mid-September. I have gotten some fish while fishing walleyes after dark in May, but not many. July and August are prime time.

As to baits, bucktails work well. I haven't tried jerks, I think they'd be too erratic. I don't use cranks, as we're fishing 7 feet of water and less. Topwaters are the favorite for evenings and after dark on the Chip. Faster topwaters (Top Raiders, Tallywackers, Topper Stoppers) in the evening. At full dark, the slow stuff (Hawg Wobblers, Creepers, Globes) work best.

I have noticed that this season, the action has seem slow after dark. I've boated few fish after 9:30.

Good Fishing,
Dave Dorazio
