| Looked on Mapquest, they recommend going from Minneapolis to St Cloud, Nisswa, Bemdiji, Roseau, then to border. I was planning on going from Minneapolis to Grand Rapids, Baudette, Warroad, to border. Which way is better and or/quicker? How much time does it take to get from Minneapolis to NW angle. Coming up from Iowa, takes me 3 hours to get to Minneapolis, would like to know drive time from there to get total drive time. Mapquest drivetime numbers can be quite inaccurate at times and routes can be suspect, so that is why I am asking. Thanks! | |

| go thru Roseau. Ive made the drive around 40 times. total drive time depends on lots of things, what side of the cities are you talking about? depending on traffic, road construction, if you stop, and how much you want to speed it will be 6-8 hrs. to young's bay | |

Location: Warroad, Mn | I like to get on I35 to Moose Lake, then 73 to 2 to Deer River, then 46 to Northhome, then 1 to Shooks and 72 to Baudette, 11 to Warroad. Drove to the Twin Cities hundreds of times with many different routes and this is the fastest, may not be the shortest. Plus you're on four lane for around 150 miles. Sprague is also a 24 hour customs if you happen to be coming through in the middle of the night. Also check 511MN Travel for road info. http://hb.511mn.org/main.jsf# Sort of depends on what side of the state you are coming from. When I come up from Minnetonka I go up 169 Good luck! Doug Johnson

Location: Forest Lake, Mn. | I live in Forest Lake just north of downtown St. Paul about 25 miles. I take the route that Doug Johnson described when I have gone up. I'm usually going to Sabaskong Bay and not the Angle and it takes me about 6 hours to get to Morson from my place, that includes gas stops and the border crossing check time too. The Angle might take a little longer.
As Doug says, it's 70 mph freeway all the way to Moose Lake and then it's 2 lane highway and usually there's little traffic on those roads and that makes up for traffic snarls going through Minneapolis and I-35W. Coming from Iowa, I'd take I-35E through St. Paul instead of Mpls. Less traffic hassles through the cities and if you time it right to avoid rush hours, early morning and late afternoon, you can pretty much sail through St. Paul at posted speed limits. But then I hate driving in Mpls side of town but that's just me.
Try using Google Maps and enter into it, Forest Lake, Mn To Baudette Mn to see the mileage and route that Doug Johnson mentions. I like google maps, it usually seems pretty accurate for me.
I just checked it on google maps and it shows the route from forest lake to baudette as being 295 miles and 5 hours and 2 minutes, so add a little more to the Angle.

| Thanks for all the replies. I have taken Doug's way to Grand Rapids for years. We will probably go that way unless we think we need to stop at Reed's at Mille Lacs for that one special bait we might not have yet.........then up to Grand Rapids on 169. Doug, are there a few dumb big muskies up there yet for us Northwest Angle newbies to find? | |

Location: Forest Lake, Mn. | Well, if you come up I-35E through St. Paul and want to stop for that hot bait you can hit Joe's Sporting Goods.
http://www.joessportinggoods.com/storelocator/
As you can see from the map this is only a 1/2 mile or so off of I-35E and you can then continue on using Doug's and my route.
Or you can swing over a little further and hit Thorne Bros too. You'd still come up I-35E but you'll have to cut over and then back track a little bit to go to Thorne Bros.

Or you can stop at Gander Mountain in Forest Lake and you'll go right by that on I-35E and can jump off the freeway and jump right back on to it and continue on. You can see the store from I-35E as you go by.
http://www.gandermountain.com/modperl/storelocator.cgi?r=storeDirec...
Or you can stop at Cabela's in Owatonna too and that is also right off of I-35 as you come north out of Iowa. Then continue on north and follow I-35E through St. Paul and the rest of Doug's route. Also you can stop at all of these stores too but that will add a lot of time to your trip.

I don't have anything against Reed's at Mille Lacs. I am just showing you that there are many places to stop along the way for that hot muskie bait.
So from south to north without going very far off of I-35/35E, you can hit Cabela's, Joe's, and then Gander Mountain in that order. As I said for Thorne Bro's you'll have to cut over to HwY 65 and then backtrack to I-35 but that might be worth it too.
Or you can order that hot bait online and have it shipped to you before you leave home and not stop at all if time is urgent to hit the water as soon as possible.

Fishpoop, you, are an enabler. When it comes to musky lures, I am in more of a need of an intervention than a person to help me buy even more lures..............just kidding, thanks for the help. I have been to all those places except Joe's. We are leaving pretty early this Sat, so I think the only place that might be open by the time we drive by is Reed's. But, I already got a shipment from Thornes last week and a box of Wobber's from my old pal Wade, so I MIGHT be set for the week. Thorne's has a custom DC-10 that is called northern pike, I think, that has green blades, that they were out of. I am sure that would have been the lure that caught the 55" next week...that is why I was going to stop at Reed's to see if they had something similar.

| I live in Minnetonka and by far the shortest and fastest way to the Angle from my home to my cabin is 94 to Clear Lake, cut over to Hwy 10N to Mötley. Get on 64N and onto Bemdji and go on 89N to Roseau.
I usually make the trip in about 6 hours 30 minutes. Which I just did in my buddies pickup, and have done a bunch each year. If one has to trailer a boat I would add an hour.
Right now there is construction on 89 south of Roseau to about Grygla. But if you head on Hwy 1 north of Grygla and cut across to 89 on cty rd 2, you can avoid the construction.

Hey, hey, what can I say? I'd hate for you to be up there on a hot bite and not have the hot lure handy!! What is an "enabler" to one person is another persons, "just being helpful." lol Have a great trip. | |
