Just read a post on another board regarding the Iowa State Record caught a few years ago had a full size seagull in it's belly when caught. I worked in an outdoors store when this fish was "caught" and heard some pretty disturbing info.Does anyone know the truth?Funny that a 50# muskie is caught and kept but not a lot of info out there.Let the "Cornbelt Controversy" begin. I remember that fish story clearly. It was a 2 pound seagull the fish pucked up after the weight in so the weight stayed the same.
If you look at that photo with the guy inside and compare it with the live release picture you will see that it should of been well over 70 pounds. Well they are proportioned the same as in girth vs lenght.

Ok, I can't control myself any longer. I was told by a few very reliable sources in that area, that the fish was dying/ choking on the bird when a couple guys who were fishin' walleyes saw it floundering on the surface and motored over there. On a walleye outfit with 10lb mono the guy ties on a mepps giant killer and starts throwin'.Mind you, the area is relatively shallow with heavy cabbage. The fish eats the bucktail and the rest is history. Why would a fish with a bird in it's gullet eat a relatively small bucktail? Those 50#ers must not fight very well either. 10lb test and med. spinning gear in heavy cabbage. I would think someone would have seen the battle, especially on those lakes as they can be really crowded in the summer.Would love some input from those around Spirit and Okoboji on this deal. From my recollection, even the manufacturers were wary of the anglers story.Chuck? Todd? Nice to know there fatties in Iowa though. Steve

I wondered the same thing "gut wise" when me Dad caught a 34lb. rockfish last year! He caught it off the bank at a lake near the house here fooling around on a small Mirror Lure jerk bait. He tried to release it but no luck, so my brother cleaned it and the thing had 9 gizzard shad up to 11" long in the gut. Couldn't believe how full it was, but I guess he maybe threw on top of it and wham. Seems like if that 'ski was choking on a bird though it would be nigh impossible to catch; one would like to think it was a legal catch anyhows....

I interviewed Kevin myself via telephone a few days after the catch. He related the story to me as follows:

August 1st, warm day and him and his friend are doubting the walleyes are biting, but he wants to get on the water. He has a "hvy" spinning outfit with him, and a few Mepps Musky Killers. They have fished for muskies a few times before, with limited success. They set out on Big Spirit and I think he said about 1/2 hour into the day he hooked into the monster (on a weedbed that I know well!). I did note that he said it wasn't as much of a fight as one might suspect.

As far as the bird in question, it was a "lesser tern", not a seagull. The bird was discovered when Lance Christensen, the taxidermist cut her open.

Not sure if that clears anything up, but that's what I know.

When that fish was caught, and the story came out, it just seemed like a big infomercial. It would be interesting to hear from Shannon Green, or other MI members in the area to see if there is more to the story.
