| This report is a little late, but I had to travel for work right after I got back from fishing.
Fished LOTW for the first time ever in the area around Tamarack Island Wilderness Lodge 8/3 - 8/10. The first 3 days we were there, we found muskies pretty much everywhere we looked; the bigger fish definitely preferring rock points or boulders/reefs in 4'-8' of water. Fish were taking double 10's both away from the boat and in the 8, and topwaters in the evening. We saw approximately 35 fish in those 3 days, biggest of the 14 we landed was a 46", caught several at 44 and 45" My boat partner and I both had a couple chanches at legit 50's which we messed up; 1 came unbuttoned boatside while thrashing around and I pulled the bucktail straight out of another ones mouth instead of setting back over the fish when it took on the 8. Other guys in camp caught several at 49", 50" and I believe there was a 52" caught during those 3 days. On Tuesday, a cold front came through and dropped water temps by 6 or 8 degrees, wind picked up and blew hard for 2 days straight, fishing was a little tougher after that and our shallower wind blown rock fish seemed to disappear but we continued to find fish holding a little deeper especially in more protected narrow channels and saddles. Regular dawgs, glides and slow rolled spinnerbaits all produced working hard for 2-3 muskies a day for the remainder of the trip. Pike action picked up with the cooler weather though and I caught a 46" northern with an outrageously huge head.
I'd like to give a shout out to Todd and Kim of Tamarack Island lodge, they made our first trip to LOTW a great time; super nice people who'd give the shirt off their back if you needed it, relaxed, friendly atmosphere, nice boats with GPS finders. Cabins were comfortable with the kitchen, bath, shower amenities we needed; slightly rough but they're fixing them up - had a carpenter staying on the island doing just that. Definitely worth the money, and I would go back in a heart beat. I should also mention, we had a guide the first day, Oliver Gibbons, who put us on fish, helped us learn the ropes and was an absolute pleasure to share a boat with; later that week he took 8th place in the Kenora Bass International; congrats Oliver!
