Spring Tactics II

I know this question was asked last year, but after another year, I'm sure more/different opinions can be given.
1. What kind of structure are you looking for (how does weather influence your choice)?

2. How deep are you fishing in general (how does weather influence your choice)?

3. Do sudden weather changes effect the fish's behavior differently than at other times of the year?

4. I'm sure some have noticed that certain colors are hot in the spring, and then the same color will not even get a follow later on in the year, why is this?

5. Obviously catching fish involves many variables, but in your opinion what is the best thing you can do to put more fish in the boat? (ex: slow your presentation down)

1. What kind of structure are you looking for (how does weather influence your choice)?

Jason: New green weeds, but if not..Rock!. I have caught alot of fish off rock in the spring. Rock is best on cloudy days or rainy days.

2. How deep are you fishing in general (how does weather influence your choice)?

Jason: Mostly five feet and under, dont be afraid to fish even in a foot of water. Hottest part of the day, go shallow in the muck and dark bottom areas.

3. Do sudden weather changes effect the fish's behavior differently than at other times of the year?

Jason: Mostly the water temps are cool for the most part. Think warm...and you will do alright. You want to find the most aggressive fish. The only catch to this is early morning low light is very good for spring fish, even pitch dark.

4. I'm sure some have noticed that certain colors are hot in the spring, and then the same color will not even get a follow later on in the year, why is this?

Jason: Every lake has its color pattern and one thing I have noticed is those color patterns change from year to year. Start with firetiger and move to shinner colors and you should be safe.

5. Obviously catching fish involves many variables, but in your opinion what is the best thing you can do to put more fish in the boat? (ex: slow your presentation down)

Jason: Yes!!! Slow down..use lots of pauses and change ups. Dont be afraid to let your minnow bait rise slowly to the surface and then give them a pop in shallow water. Dead rises are deadly in the spring.

My favorite spring baits are: Undertakers glide baits, 6" drop belly Slammer Jerkbaits, 5" and 6" Slammer cranks and the good old Mepps #5. You dont have to go small all the time, but on my lakes its the best thing to do.

Jason,
Do you think that muskies are spooked by the boat in spring (pre-spawn, spawn) ?

Last Spring I found a great shallow pattern and the fish that I caught were shortly after the bait hit the water. If they followed, once they got close to the boat, they turned tail and were gone.
