Location: MN | My non fishing relatives see my gear while I'm packing for a week and give me crap about the rods and reels. I usually pack 8, 4 muskie and 4 walleye rigs. Funny thing is I use them all. I know I'm on the low end compared to some of you.

| This year at an event down in KY, there was a guy who needed a really odd part to get back on the water. Somebody in the parking lot said, "Ask Marty, he brings everything he owns with him!" I actually did have the part to the guys great joy, and am not at all shy about having my truck look like a moving van packed with all my worldly possessions. I just don't see any reason not to take all the rods, reels, and spare parts you might possibly need in order to have a vacation that is not spoiled. To me, my musky trips represent the absolute "joy" of being, they are precious, and I am not apologetic about bringing way to much! |

Location: Nebraska | My buddy gives me crap when I bring a dozen rods. I usually end up using about 8 at some time depending on conditions and type of fishing. My thought is "better to have and not use than to not have and wish you did". A rod sitting in the rack 700 miles away does no one any good.

I don't put all my eggs in one basket for that reason. 2-6 for me, depending on what I'm fishing for, and maybe a few spare reels and parts in the boat.

| When going on a week-long trip:
- 8 salmon trolling rods (downrigger and dipsey rods)
- 4 muskie rods (2 glass trolling rods and 2 casting rods)
- 2 walleye rods (both spinning rods)
- 2 bass rods (one spinning rod one casting rod)
- 2 gillin' rods (both ultra light spinning rods)
That's 18 rods on a trip with me that week. That does not count all the rods/reels/gear that my two to three additional boat partners bring. No...not all 18 of my rods are in the boat with us at all times. We swap out according to what we're fishing for that day. Obviously when we're out on the big lake, trolling salmon, there isn't any of the other gear in the boat at that time. When we're back to the inland lake, obviously none of the salmon trolling gear with us in the boat at that time. Fish the muskies and northerns in the mornings and evenings. Fish the bass and gills mid-day and just prior to sundown. Walleyes at night.

Location: minocqua, wi. | 3 or 4 rods and at least 5 reels. last year i took only 3 reels and wound up 1 short causing me to quit early on the last day.
3 trolling motors though ... LOL, i'd rather leave the second dozen rods at home and have at least one spare of these than just a bunch of rods. |

Location: 15 miles east of Lake Kinkaid | If I am going musky fishing 4-5 combos will suffice but bass fishing I usually bring 6-10 combos. It depends if it is my boat or I am the passenger, also. As Marty said, "overpacking" has saved me on a few trips because things happens (rods and reels break, tires blow, lures break, etc). |

| 2 ultralight rods
2 walleye rods
1 bass rod
2 musky combos + 1 backup
So that's 8 rods right there. Since we fish for everything I use all of them. Add in Samantha's stuff, and you can pretty much double that. The backup combo has saved more than one trip...

| I'm thankful for this thread for now if anyone ever questions me buying another musky combo, I'll just quote you guys or direct them to this thread. A dozen musky rods? Wow.
I've never had more than 5 rods (just for me) in my boat at one time. I only own about 7 setups... that's for all species. I guess I have a long way to go.
I guess I'm posing another question: What's the ideal amount for a multi-day trip, just muskies? I would think a guy could get by with
- (2) "long" (9') XXH
- (2) "medium" (8') XH
- (2) "short" (6'-6" or 6'-9") XH

| I'm going on a trip to cave run in september. I usually take about 6 rods and somewhere around 70% of my musky lures.
I've learned to make plenty of extra leaders for the trip. I replace them if they have the slightest fray. |

Location: Minneapolis, MN | I only have two setups and they work for me, a 9 ft XXH and a 7/6 XH. 90% of the lures get thrown with the 9 ft and the 7/6 typically only comes out if I want to use a glider or jerk bait. |

| I normally take the following to these type of trips
Bass- Walleye = 14 to 18 rods depending on time of year. i normally will fish all but 3 rods (have extra 3 reels with too.) Bass fishing is like golfing to me, I need the correct stick for the correct application
Musky - 8 rods 5 reels and will fish 3 on average. (musky stuff is hard to replace on most trips with quality stuff, need back ups)
Funny thing is this year I have done 2 longer musky trips. One I used 2 rods and the other I used 1. If you know what the fish are eating it really cuts down on how many rods you use.
Gotta love tackle!

I also keep a 6'6" MH spinning setup and a 7' MH bait casting setup in the boat in case my dad gets tired of not catching anything and decides he wants to fish for something else. |

Location: Gilberts IL/Rhinelander WI | I'll bring 8 musky combos to spring bay this year, 5 in the boat, 3 in the cabin. Just in case. A backup bucktail ,rubber, and glider rod. Also a spare trolling motor, a couple extra gps/sonar among other "stuff". It would suck to be all the way up there and not be able to fish how you want to. Too much, probably, better safe than sorry though. |

Musky fishing - std ratio reel/all purpose rod (big nasty), low speed reel/all purpose rod (big dawg), spare (8'6" premier).
4-5 spare reels in the boat at all times in a floating pelican case for me and whoever else is in the boat.
Keep it simple. |

| Next time someone asks why you have so many rods ask them back if they golf. If they ask why you have such a big net tell them your part-time job is a dog catcher. If they ask why your baits are so big say you intend to not catch the biggest fish in the lake.

I usually take with me 6 to 8 rods, but these three absolutly make every trip independant of time of year, weather, or location. |

Only two or three will be in the boat at any given time since I can change out stuff in a couple of minutes. |

I know it takes seconds to unclip a leader and put on a new lure, but I am too impatient for that and need to be able to pick up a rod and throw.....

| for real, musky fishing would be, in order....
a light jig/creature rod
2 medium bucktail/topwater rods
2 medium/heavy crankbait/spinnerbait rods
a heavy sucker rod if I have some big suckers
a heavy glide bait rod
a X heavy crankbait rod
All the reels are older Abus that I bought cheap, upgraded easy and can fix on the road. Rods vary, decent quality St. Croix, Fenwick and Cortlands mostly.
