09 150 Optimax

It appears to smoke more than most engines. Havent torn it apart and am running Quikleen and Quikcare through most tanks. Optimax of DFI mercury oil at all times.

Dont notice alot of guys running optimax's to see if there is a difference but a few people have commented that it seems to send out more exhaust than some. Anyone else notice this or is this common with Opti's.

The exhaust doesnt smell too bad, like somethings burning.

I"ve got an 07 150 Opti and don't have really any noticable exhaust smoke. Mabye somethings up with the oil injection using more oil than necessary causing the smoke?

I would get the motor checked. Possible issues with oil injection system, oil recirc system, or possible motor is not warming up and running cold.

How much oil do you use?

I've never seen one actually with oil smoke while running. There is some vapor that comes out of the vent in the back. Pretty sure this is from the compressor. Pretty sure most, if not all the exhaust comes out the prop.

Doesnt use much. Just got back from 9 days on LOTW, not a ton of running, maybe went through a gallon, possibly 2 at the most. Thats were the "smoke" is coming from, the back vent. Its got a smoky smell to it but not terribly strong. I knew the exhaust comes from the prop and that is easy to spot, just wasnt aware of if anything was leaking (Doesnt appear to be) that would cause the vent to produce that much.

It may just be alot more water vapor, it does it much more when there is a change in temperature, etc and thats easy to spot and understand, just seems mine does it more than most. It will go in at some point just to be sure.

I know the optis run extra oil ratio within the first hours of it's life, then automatically reduces the ratio. How many hours are on it?

If you went from forward to neutral 3 or 4 times without the motor running you just reset the motor. It will again run the extra oil like it was new. I know kids like to play in the boat. Is there any chance this happened ?

I think you are thinking of Evinrude. You can not do that with a Merc. Your smoke is likely just water vapor from exhaust. If it shows up more on cooler morning then theres no doubt. Optis do not smoke and if they do you best take it to a dealer pronto.

It can happen. The Mercury tech that works on my Opti told me this. I wouldn't have posted it without knowing.

Neutral to forward five times in ten seconds will put the motor in break in mode. It will go back to normal in 20 hours. I saw this on the bass boat forums and verfied it via google search. Doesn't mean that is what happened in this case though.

That's a big variance in oil usage. A gallon or two could be the difference in 50 gallons of fuel or more. When trying to determine if you have a problem, you need to be accurate in what you are observing. If you said you used 2 gallons of oil and 30 gallons of fuel, I would say your using too much oil. If you said I used a gallon of oil, and 50 gallons of fuel, then I'd say you're about right, and I'd not worry too much.

Id say we probably ran through 60 gallons on gas and used about a gallon of oil, maybe a little bit more, so no over usage. We didnt have any really long runs and that usually uses more oil and I didnt run open throttle that much The originally estimation was just based at looking at the tank and that isnt an exact measurement. Im guessing its fine, I will just pay attention closer when I see other guys running opti's to see if its similar.
