Headed to AML with my wife, who just hurt her thumb and can't cast with a bait casting reel. She typically throws top waters or small buck tails. She is also vertically challenged (short).  That said, last year she missed a 50+ because her 7' rod wasn't long enough for her to complete a big figure eight. Any suggestions for a decent spinning rod, 8' long, and capable of throwing top waters?

I really like my St. Croix Avid inshore... I have the 8' heavy. It will throw lures from 1 ounce up to 4 +... I mainly use it for twitching cranks and topwaters. Works great for smaller bucktails also... but anything over an 8 blade will have too much flex, imo.

I have a 5000 size shimano on mine and it matches up nice.

If you want a spinning rod that is actually designed to throw musky sized baits and handle the way a casting rod does may I suggest you take a look at the Musky Shop Platinum series? I like the St. Croix inshore rods for some applications but find them a little too limiting. http://www.muskyshop.com/modules/cart/products.php/nav_id/23/page/1...

Like Toby said, the 8' heavy inshore from St Croix is a great rod. I prefer the Avid model because of the color.
