Just bought a new rod and need a new reel to go on it but the options are endless.
The rod is one of crashes bluegrass rods. The head jerker to be exact. 7'6, 2-8oz I believe was the lure weight.

Here's my situation. I fish small streams and rivers. I don't throw DCGs, pounders, etc. biggest thing I throw is the regular bulldawg, mid medussa, I don't fish double bladed bucktails either. I need a sub 200$ reel to go with this new rod. I looked at the revo toro today and liked it alot. Idc to pony up the $ for that reel but if I can save a dollar I'm all for it. Like to keep my options open. I thought about just throwing another garcia 6500 on it or a Cardiff. What else is out there? What would you guys go with?

I am not sure what the current is like the rivers and streams you fish, but I would imagine if you even wanted to consider casting lures upstream and bringing them back downstream, you would want a high-speed reel. Counting out double 10s, I would imagine you fish smaller bucktails like Mepps musky maribou, giant killers, Hischs Ghosttails, etc. Also, in my setups, I prefer a faster reel for picking up slack on dawgs/dussas. Sounds to be me you should be in the market for a mid-to-high-speed reel, definitely not a winch type reel.

For getting the most bang for your buck, I would watch the Buy/Sell forum on here. Seems like there is always some used HS revos going for $175-200. The Tranx is an extremely nice reel as well (very impressed after I tested it at Tadpoles in Eagle River). I just don't think that will ever hit your $200 mark in the next year or two.

Yes high speed is a factor. I throw up,down, and cross current. My current reels are all 5:3:1 I think that's the ratio. I'd like to faster. You also hit the nail on the head with the bucktails I do throw. Mepps marabous, giant killers, and grim reaper spinnerbaits are a staple. Also throw alot of AC shiners, jakes, beleivers etc

If you're looking for a budget reel that has a higher pickup, you could possibly look at the the Abu C4 or the Lexa 300.

I looked at the blue 6600 c4 today. 6:3:1 I believe was the ratio.

Correct, which means it brings in 30" per turn vs the 25" per turn of the 6500. Maybe I misunderstood, thought you were looking for a higher speed reel.

I'm fine with 6:3:1. That's fast enough for what I'm doing. How are the 6600s? Are these a viable option? Basically what I'm asking is. Am I handicapping myself in anyway if I decided on a round garcia?

if you can go a little more look at the shimano curado. I have one and a toro and prefer the shimano. It will handle all the stuff you throw fine, has fast pick-up and is super smooth with great ergonomics

I'd give American Legacy Fishing a call. They were selling Revo toros hs 6.4:1 gear ratio in 50 and 60 sizes last week for$130.00 no tax and free shipping. Great deal. I picked up 2 of the 60 size. They advertised them until gone. They were going fast but would be worth a call if you liked those reels. You can checkout the thread " revo toro great deal" I think is the name of the thread in this "tackle and equipment" forum.

you can pick up curado 300's for less than 200 on the bay of e. My buddy's lexa 300 is actually wearing out, but i suspect a lack of maintenance

The curados are nice and will handle everything you are throwing, as will the Abu c4. There are also a bunch of cheap new HS toros on Ebay now.

I like 6500C3 because my hand is small however I don't like use this reel to throw heavy jerkbait like 4 oz! Which reel is good for large heavy lure like bulldawg or large reefhawg, etc. Thanks!

You can find Shimano Curado's on Ebay for under $200. I bought a used Curado 301 from Amazon for $156. The description said it was like new & I think the reel was a return that they were trying to get rid of because it had no signs of use.

I appreciate everyone's input. The more I thought about it the more I wanted the revo toro HS. So when I got off work this am, I went down and picked it up. Can't wait to fish it tommorow. Might even hit the cave Sunday.

To be honest with you that rod is for throwing heavy baits. You specifically said you did not want to throw pounders or double 10's.
I have that rod and its fine for heavier baits. You need one of his other rods. Either the Big Blade chaser or the Dream Stick. These rods will throw lighter baits and will load properly so you can launch your casts.
Having said that I'd get a Revo Toro.

I've got a rod for my spinnerbaits and AC shiners. I needed sonething a bit stouter for the mid medusas and regular dawgs. I think a mid medussa is right around 6oz, so I think this rod will be fine. I also like to throw the large reefhawgs so this rod should do well here too
