Anyone used the penn sargus baitcaster for muskie? What are your thoughts about this reel? My local tackle shop carries these. They feel really nice. Very smooth feeling reel. A tad heavy but seems very solid. I've been thinking about the revo toro but have not been anywhere that carries them. I like to handle a product before I buy. I don't know which size it was he carried. I think it held 130yards of 14# mono.

The penn Sargus is a great reel, very well made, good drag system, just keep a thumb on the spool for hook sets and for ripping baits, this reel has no backup pawl for the A-R Bearing. I have one I have used for 2 years on baits up to 4-5oz.

I don't know much about reel mechanics but having to keep your thumb on the spool for a hookset? Not possible for me. This does not make sense to me?

Hmm really? Lets say I'm cranking a jake. Left hand on the cork, right hand reeling? When a ski comes in and t-bones my jake I have to in a split second move my thumb to the spool? If that is what pike master is talking about? Did I read it right? No need for smart azz comments

They assume you palm the reel on the retrieve.

I have one,it is ok. The reel I own is not a true bait caster, the pawl doesn't follow the line when you cast.If I had know that i would have saved my $. I would save up for an abu.

Ky would help to have explained that in your second post. Yes, holding the fore grip will make that impossible. IMHO, I don't care to hold the rod that way, I get better control and bait action "palming" I hold the reel more underneath and only my thumb up high. You want your thumb on the spool when a fish hits boat side for disengaging and thumbing the spool.

Thanks for the added info. I use round reels. This would be my first low profile. It's probably easier to to fish the way you describe with a low profile than it is a round reel. I just bought a new rod and am looking for a sub 200$ reel to throw on it.

you csn also find a shimano curado 300 used under that too. I ost of my reels used here, ebay or reconditioned from places like ffo tackle. way cheaper than retail.
