Hey guys! For starters I will say that I've fished out of a buddy's fishhawk for a few years now and am for sure picking one up! I have a bro in law selling his 2003 1750 with a yammy f115. Took it for a drive tonight and its a nice rig for the price. I have a few concerns though, first off I dont know squat about yamaha! Good, bad, issues? How many hrs is too many? Second, the transom trim cap is popped out in a v shape on the inside of the motorwell right in the middle and the screw on top is halfway out. Any ideas on the cause? Theres no other damage back there to indicate anything but i do know he uses the built in motor lock when trailering. Otherwise a few cosmetic things but the package comes with a minnkota pd55 and an hds5 for 9k. The deal is contingent on the dealers report on hrs and motor health along with whatever is going on with the transom. Any opinions on the package are appreciated!

Great motor and a great price on the rig. Yamaha motors are extremely solid overall. That is not to say things can come up over time, but they are very reliable and dependable motors. I have an F150 with quite a few hours and (knock on wood) its been great. The owner probably should have used a transom saver while trailering from what im getting from your original post. Elaborate on the trim cap issue if you could and I'm sure others who know more will chime in.

Crestliner had some serious transom issues in the past. Check that out really well.

Heres a pic. If you zoom in under the motor you can see the trim cap is tweaked up.

I've got a 2003 with 450+ hours on the engine. It's a merc, but I've been told that this engine was actually built by Yamaha, the Merc parts are the cowl and lower unit. My buddy has the Yamaha version of the motor, but pop it open and it looks exactly like mine. In any event - my motor runs awesome and I am very happy with it.

But...I would be a bit scared of the fact that the previous owner didn't use a transom saver. the motor lock will hold the motor in place, and it is OK to use in case of emergency, but it does not keep the weight off the transom while trailering the boat. Over time, that's going to put a lot of wear and tear on the transom and could result in some very serious issues (such as - needing a new transom $$$$)

I have a 2003 Crestliner 1750 Fishhawk with a 2003 Yamaha F 80. I think the boat fishes great and the motor has been flawless. The previous owner beat the hell out of the boat and motor, but I've owned it for 6 years now with no issues.

I have a 2004 1750 hawk with a opti 75. A bit undersized motor, but fishes well. Price looks right as well. I put a deck in the back to really make it nice for two guys to fish out of. BG

I have a 2003 1750 fishhawk that i bought new with a Yammie F75. Looking at that (the transom cap) I would pop open the access cover shown in the picture, reach in and feel the plywood ( transom)...is wet or dry? (dry = good) Next I would have a small screwdriver or nail and try and push it into the plywood in various places you can access. ( both rear compartments) if the plywood is hard, you're most likely O.K. If the transom fails either test then the transom would most likely have to be replaced ( no fun). If O.K. i would seal up any open spots with a good marine sealant. This could have happened when the motor was installed. Another thing the transom looking at it from the side should be "square" with no waves or wiggles to it. I missed the part of him not using a transom saver, that is a must on all boats or else you;ll destroy the plywood in the transom.

Everything seems solid back there and the transom looks straight. Didnt have a string or line with me to check it. I will probably install the transom saver right in his driveway. The boat has done some traveling but mostly lived on a lift, the most miles its gone is about 20 at a time via trailer. Its at the dealer right now getting the motor checked out so the guy said he'd have them look at the transom.

When trailering you want everything tight. Bow tight against bow roller, tie downs tight, transom saver firmly in place. What your trying to accomplish is making the boat and trailer into a single unit while going down the road. Also never keep everything tight more than 24 hours ( you can damage the hull), only while trailering. When just sitting in storage loosen all tie downs and remove the transom saver and store the motor in a down position to let it drain water.

So long as everything seems good in the back you'll be just fine I guarantee it. You've fished in the boat for years so you're familiar with the fishhawk (very stable, lots of casting deck, little wet on rough water). Yamaha's are fantastic. I have a 135 Honda on my '04 1850 DC. The 115 matches that 1750 perfectly.

I would look at that transom very closely. I just welded the transom cap back on after a buddy had to cut it off to replace the transom in a 98 tournament. I was not impressed with the way the transom sat in the boat. Seams as if its left totally open for water to get to it. I would raise the motor and pull down on the lower unit and watch closely to see if the transom flexes and all.
