Location: Lake of the Woods, Morson, Ontario | What will the month bring? After a cold front swept through in the third week of July..the last week of July did not do too much to warm things back up and water temps are in the high 60s several places to begin August. Very clear water compared to normal is making spotting fish and structure much easier.
The month started with a bang of big fish again...with a thick 49" being the first biggie of the month and an absolute super tanker spotted that will sure to be revisited a few times throughout the weekend by the anglers that brought her up.
A few less muskie anglers around this week, but will try to keep the information as current as possible.

Location: Lake of the Woods, Morson, Ontario | Fish still active despite drop in water temps. Action has been good..not all boats getting fish to hit...but one group in only their second trip to the area has boated 10 (up to 47") in their 3 days of fishing..8 have been boat side...several other nippers that didn't get hooked up. Saddles and rock points been the key for them.
Water temps have been upper 60s into the low 70s late in the afternoon and evenings if the sun has been out.
Cranks, topwaters been the most reported type of bait. Seems to be a real nice fish caught every day the last two weeks.
Another 47.5" yesterday from a rock out off a point.
Rain most of the day with a chance of t-storms. Might get some of the followers eating.

Location: Lake of the Woods, Morson, Ontario | The inevitable has occurred. We are starting to see some bloom. When the winds laid right down, some areas greened up a bit. Wind will help keep different areas more clear than others. Not severe by any means, but starting to show up after amazingly clear water most of the year to date. |

Location: Lake of the Woods, Morson, Ontario | Bloom typically stays around through turnover once it settles in. Was good and clear the other night most places again.
Not much green in the sewer thank the other night Larry. Mostly black in there. haha. |

Location: Lake of the Woods, Morson, Ontario | Fish staying active through the cold front.....most of the action from the rocks. Particularly points with sunken rocks, boulders around them and saddles with rocks/boulders. Still a variety of baits being used to move and catch fish. Water temps were 66-68 most areas I fished Thursday evening in the wind.
Big fish of the week were 50, 50.5 with several more in the 46-49 range.
Finally some sunshine and warmer temps in the forecast so that should help the new groups coming in to chase muskies this week. |

Location: Chippewa Falls, WI | just got back from a week up at Mylies. We had a pretty good week considering we haven't been there since 1996. We boated 12 fish with the biggest being a 49" and a chunky 45". Most of the others were between 39"-41". We had a lot of action with most days resulting in 20 to 30 sightings and we boated fish everyday. It took us a day to figure out the cabbage beds we used to fish are long gone and rocks were the place to be. After that it was trying to figure out what would trigger them on the figure 8 and after that was established it was a lot of fun through mid-week. We did notice a change in fish attitude as the winds picked up and temps dropped but we still had plenty of action. Over half of our fish were caught on figure 8's including the 49". Most of those coming on a completely different throw back bait after the fish left. The biggest fish we hooked up during the week was the day after the 49" and the very next spot after boating the 45". Long story short...after hooking up on the figure 8 and multiple big runs we put her in the net and she literally barrel rolled up and out, straightening both trebles in the net. It literally left me sick to my stomach and in tears. (not ashamed to say it in the least) I haven't personally had enough fish on of that caliber to put an exact figure on it but it was night and day compared to the 49" of the night before and the chunky 45" I had just netted for my dad. We all guessed her to be 52"-53" minimum and significantly heavier then the 49". All in all it was a great week with plenty of action and a good amount of fish in the net. At the end of the day like so many times...THE BIG ONE GOT AWAY!

Location: Lake of the Woods, Morson, Ontario | Great report, Aaron. Thanks for letting us know how things went. Sorry to hear the story of the big one, but she was a caught fish in the 50" class. Just no picture as a memento is all. That is a heart breaker for sure.
Week starting off great with a 46, 48 and 52.5 all yesterday. Rocks still the place to be. 5 of the 6 fish seen in my boat last night were on rocks.
Water temps were in the low 70s when the sun was out, but dropped down to upper 60s fast before dark. |

Sunday, Monday and Tuesday AM alone...from 4 boats reporting:
2 @ 46,
2 @ 48,
1 @ 50,
1 @ 51,
1 @ 52.5.
Don't know all the baits used, but mostly rock fish on double 10s. One 50 was a depth raider. Barbless hooks on the 50 and 51. It's cool to be barbless!!
The inches are piling up in the Sabaskong Bay area of Lake of the Woods.
Stable weather continuing through the week.

Location: Lake of the Woods, Morson, Ontario | More big fish caught through the week. Mostly ALL rock related. Bucktails and crank baits seem to be the tickets. Another 51 yesterday for another angler's personal best. Wind blown points, shorelines were better yesterday after activity slowed down a bit during two days of flat calm, sunny high sky days. Also some action reported just behind the points where current breaks, but not as much on the calm side of islands as was the case a couple weeks back.
Water temps been mid-upper 60s except during heat of the afternoon with the sun out. Some warmer temps coming this week should bring surface temps up again.
Another busy week of people throwing baits so hope to have more good action to report.
Big fish have really been rewarding our anglers persistence this year.

Location: Lake of the Woods, Morson, Ontario | Rocks, rocks and MORE rocks. Fish been active on the windy points and just behind the windy points/shorelines.
One boat landed 7 on Sunday (losing 3) and then hung up a nickel on Monday during the main session for a 12 dozen in 1-3/4 days. I did not get to talk to them after their evening session last night.
Big complexes and rock points.
Buckatils, topwater and crankbaits getting action from those reporting in.
Hope to get back out there in a day or two after a week off.
Hot, hot, hot temps the last two days bring water temps to low 70s mid-late day before cooling some at night. Temps down to mid 70s in the forecast with sunshine the rest of the week.
The moon is full. Get your hawgs spotted for the primetime bite tonight!! |

Location: Lake of the Woods, Morson, Ontario | Jimi -- Should be able to get you the same spot as last year. We'll see you when you arrive. I can't remember which spot you were in though so we'll talk when you get here.
Will likely concentrate on rocks throughout the month but have to check weeds periodically. September baits aren't much different than mid summer peaks. You have to cover the basics. Cranks/twitchers, bucktails (8s, 10s), surface tail spinners, dive and rise, gliders, and spinner baits can all be effective. I have my faves but so does everyone else. Plastic/rubber never make it into my boat, but lots of anglers throw them with good results up here. Don't leave them out if you want to have all options open. If I could only have 6 baits (no particular order), i'd have a depth raider, big mama surface bait, double 8, double 10, dive & rise pull bait, and a spinner bait
Walleyes have been better lately with spinners trolled around points in 12-18 feet of water. Ounce and a half bottom bouncers and live bait have been the best way to go lately. Jigging has been a little better the last few days than the past couple weeks.
Smallies seem to be here and there...weather jigging them on classic summer walleye humps or throwing cranks at rubble...you can expect the best results in those types of situations. Keep in mind, I ge get the least info of all species when it comes to smallies. They are a very under-targeted species on Lake of the Woods..at least by our guests. Local bass tourney is this weekend so there will be some impressive bags weighed in by those that really know what they are doing.

Location: Lake of the Woods, Morson, Ontario | Been a quiet week on the lake but have a few reports. Been a few fish in some weeds and some fish on the rocks. I got out a a couple evenings and got action from rocks more so than weeds.
Double 8, Double 10, crank bait, topwater and spinner bait all brought up fish.
Water is reasonably clear in areas where a breeze can push bloom around.
Temps were sky high one evening, but cooled off to mid 70s last evening. We did not handle either of the fish we caught the last two nights. Instead, just turning the net over for a water release.
Someone did get a nice 47" from a small patch of weeds on a bucktail and we spotted a 4 footer two nights ago from a small rock point and a mid 40s that hit and got off after a little too much pressure on it when it was running.
Should get some reports from people throughout the weekend. Good luck on the water everyone.

Location: Lake of the Woods, Morson, Ontario | Month ended with some slower action during the intense heat wave. Though fish were found, they weren't as active as the previous week. Fish mostly coming from rocks and a variety of lures doing the job bringing up fish. Bucktails, crank and topwaters again the most common tools. Fish seen in some bays, but mostly rock points and near points or shelves coming out from islands. Major weather change to start September will make it an interesting month. Several nice fish 45+ caught to end the month. Bring on fall. See you on the Sept thread.
