Agreed, it is a shocker but a pleasant surprise nonetheless. One of Walker's chief campaign contributors must have proposed the idea. That's how things seem to get done these days...

Thanks Ken!

I heard about the change coming earlier this year and I thought we were going to have to wait until 2014... glad to see it happen so quickly!

Truth be told; the WMA sent the Spray and Johnson Summary reports to the WDNR a couple of years ago in an attempt to at least have a legitimate state record via the “back door”. At the time our only interest was in the muskie record, and I'm not sure if those reports helped to influence this move or not… but I would like to think so.

I'm fine with the Legacy record category. Live release is about the same as Legacy. Can't be certified. The Modern Day Category is long overdue.

As opposed to how Doyle didn't get anything done? Can you really say WI is not better off now than when Doyle was in?

Walker must have caught a 55 pounder.

However, the way I see it, some very large muskies are going to be kept now that the modern day record is much "easier" to obtain. The minimum qualifying weight for musky is 52 pounds and 4 ounces. Not that there are a lot of fish out there that weight though. However, I am sure someone (or some people) will keep a fish that they might have otherwise let go if they think that it may be a record. I hope that I am wrong though. I do like the catch and release record though - especially for a species like musky that most anglers would not even think of keeping.

Probably not. There's a release division too, and not many 50# muskies are caught anywhere...and Wisconsin isn't on the top of that list.

Agreed. Not likely to see too many 50#+ caught in WI anytime soon. Maybe GB, but most of those were already killed with the 50" limit.

This is great news. Good job Gov. Walker!
What would have been the chance of seeing this program under Doyle?

This is a huge and important step for Wisconsin. Promoting "legendary" fish just doesn't do it for modern anglers. Wisconsin anglers will now truly have a legitimate shot at catching a state record muskellunge!

One only need look at the maximum size of muskies caught in the past 60 years here in Wisconsin to know that muskies over the 55 pound mark likely never existed. Here and most everywhere else for that matter.

I'm looking forward to the C&R entries, there's going to be a lot of BS and whining over the next few years. I'd hate to be the guy who tells little Billy that his 55" muskie is really only 40. Either way though its still a step in the right direction.

I don't see any new record program when I open the link.

Just announced, the program has been scrapped due to some sort of "pressure". All traces gone.

The WI DNR should have a reality show, what a train wreck of an organization.

I read it on another musky site. The program is dead in the water due to support for the King Louie's fake record. I would at least liked to have seen the catch and release portion happen.

About the same as our chances of seeing it under Walker. The FWFHOF must be opening a mine or something.
