How do you know when these times are I have fished muskies for 4 or 5 years and want to learn more about these, I always watch the moon raise and moon set but I know im missing something without knowing the major and minor parts to this game?

Moonrise and set are your minors. Moon overhead and underfoot are the majors.

Many guys feel as Lunge does above. Overhead and underfoot occur approximately halfway between moonrise and moonset, and halfway between moonset and moonrise. You can find these times on the web site below, which claims to be "based on" John Alden Knight's solunar theory. But others feel the majors and minors occur according to the actual periods that his widow publishes in an annual book, and these times vary quite considerably on a daily basis and are different than the consistent overhead/underfoot theory. Both parties claim anecdotal support for each situation, but I will guarantee that if you fish enough you will fish thru many of these periods without any hint of activity, and other times you will notice what appears to be an increase in activity, perhaps even involving bigger fish. I've adhered to both at times, but it seems to me the last few years we have experienced less relation of those times to better action. I do believe there are definite feeding windows, but they seem to be shorter and less predictable. Whenever we're on the water we try to be on one of our better spots or go back on a bigger fish during a major, minor or moon set or rise vs running around during that time. Sometimes it pays off others it doesn't. I know that I caught my biggest within a few minutes of moonset at 1:30 in the afternoon on a sunny day and it was the only fish we caught. I've also fished thru dozens of rises and sets and majors without doing anything. It's certainly worth trying to put the odds in your favor if you're already out there, or your fishing time is limited.

Out last night from 5:30 to 9:30. Moon underfoot was at 8:00 pm and sunset was 8:50. With that info alone, I expected 8 - 9 o'clock to be the window. Well it turned out the fish were hot from the moment we got there until about 7:00. We had 8 follows, two missed boat-side strikes, and about 4 northerns in an hour and a half. It was a classic activity window, and then NOTHING at all from 7:30 to 9:30. Go figure.

I have been keeping a log for the last two season and I have found very little to no correlation to the minors and majors but many people out there with swear on their mother's lives it works. With that said if I move a nice fish I sure as heck will revisit that fish around a minor or major.

And what have you been referencing as the major/minor jb, the overhead/underfoot or do you go by the book?

There is absolutely a correlation between the sun, moon and fishing activity. It's not 100%, but anytime you can increase your odds its worth it!!!

I've started paying attention to the movements of all the local wildlife over the past few seasons. Seems like the times when you see otters, loons, beavers, deer, etc. moving about that your chances of contacting fish are pretty good.

If the seagulls are all just sitting there on the islands? Dead sea.

Haven't paid much attention to the majors/minors the last few seasons. I did plan an entire season around the majors full moon/new moon one year. Worst season ever.

About the only time I've had consistent action that I could attribute to any sort of solunar influence is when moonrise happens close to sunrise or sunset.

Oddly, though, my biggest fish have been on hot flat days when there was no major/minor and no change in conditions.

Too bad I can't use the same tactic with my dog, I would have to be on the water 24/7
