| Heading up to do a houseboat trip with the family August 9-13. Just wondering if there is a decent muskie population in Rainy to even bother trying? Might just relax and fish for eyes and pull kids tubing, but if there are good numbers of muskies, I could entertain that a couple hours a day also.
not asking any details for baits or anything, just want to know if it compares in numbers to lake like Miltona, Battle, Mille Lacs, Vermilion, and Leech. Those are the lakes I am familar with, and if they have populations similar or not.

Location: Minneapolis | The Rainy muskie population is nowhere near Miltona or Battle. Probably better than Mille Lacs, if you are in the right areas. Many areas of Rainy have essentially zero muskies (e.g. the Northwest Arm). The prime muskie areas are Redgut Bay and Seine River. Other areas like Swell Bay, Bleak Bay, Seine Bay, and nearby on the Minnesota side are supposed to have a few muskies, but you couldn't prove it by me. | |

| My girlfriend's family has a cabin up there so I have been fishing there the last three years. Was there last weekend and things were very slow. The populations in in Seine, Swell, Redgut bays are fishable but I wouldn't expect much action. Usually spend a week at a time there and have caught 1 muskie so far. I would consider them a very low density population. We usually get into some big pike so that keeps things entertaining. One observation is that there are pretty defined bite windows for the larger fish compared to other waters. I don't know which part of the lake you are going to but wouldn't necessarily travel a long distance to musky fish there from elsewhere on the lake. The big pike are much more plentiful and located throughout the lake so it may be a more productive plan to target them. | |
