How do feel about this, would you consider this mal behavior, and/or if you are crossing lines?

Yeah, I'd say that's something you just don't do. Best thing in that situation is get your bait out of the water and get out of the way.

While one is going in the figure 8 absolutely not. Stay out of the way and let your partner do his thing. Once the fish takes off it's fair game in my boat. I could care less about a partner casting towards a fish I previously raised, and in fact, I usually encourage it. Anything to try to get a fish in the boat. Despite being an ultra-competitive person, when I'm musky fishing with people it's a team sport. If my partner casts back at "my" fish an catches it, great for him. I guess I should have caught it the first time around.

I think the partner should stay out of the way until you've had a chance to use a throw-back lure. Then its fair game

I agree with this to an extent. Of course I would love to be the one that converted the follow. But as long as we get the fish in the net, does it really matter? I don't think so. If you see your buddy has a follow, he goes into the 8 and the fish swims away. YOU SHOULD ABSOLUTELY CAST AT IT! the number one goal is PUT FISH IN NET! regardless to how they get there, as long as they get there. Any fisherman that gets upset about putting fish in the net is just silly.

The way I see it, if the fish swims away from your buddies follow. He didn't do something right, thus, if you can get the fish to eat. both of you can learn something about the fish, the water, or the conditions that day. Fishing (especially for muskies) should be about team work, not selfishness.

My vote: not foul play at all. PUT FISH IN NET... thats all that should matter

In my boat do what it takes to catch it! I would not be offended at all. As long as your rod doesn't clang in to mine and someone gets to say got him I will be happy. No reason to be selfish, I love netting fish for friends and family.

Happened to me. I used it as fodder to harass my boat partner the next year or so!

A really don't care. Whatever it takes to get the fish in the boat is my rule.

Im always for team effort. Usually fishin with my dad ill have him throw back 90% of the time at it unless boat angle is off. If its a propbait that raised the fish ill snap on a weagle fast and throw back tho.

Hiya,

I am also of the crowd that says if the fish swims away, and doesn't come back from a throw back on it, all is fair for all parties involved. Now...if we leave and come back to that fish at a later time, the boat partner gets the first couple of casts as they raised the fish to begin with. If it has not shown after a couple of casts, I'll cast in as well..

I'll stay out of his way for at least a few casts, and even then move on and come back to give him or her another shot at it later. Happens all the time, here is where you saw that fish. Now get her, and I'll sit tight and let them cast at it. This is just me when just on a fun trip with friends. In a contest or tournament this would need to change.

I tend to encourage it, usually fishing with folks with less experience and I would love to see them get a fish. BR

My kids or my dad can throw at my follows. Everyone else probably should stay away, I don't throw at anyone elses anymore. Used to think it was ok but I have caught enough that I don't need to steal other peoples.

Something you talk about. To me and the guys in my boat, it usually has to do with how the fish follows. If hes chucking a search bait, and Im throwing a reaction bait, it just might be the best option to throw mine at the follow.

Im rarely apposed to someone throwing to my follows.... muskie fishing is a team sport.

I had a fish follow my bait to the boat and at the very last second it peals off and slams Billy's lure. He hollers " GET THE NET!" and I holler " KISS MY ASS, GET IT YOURSELF!".

As long as my buddy doesn't hit my rod or get too close, I'm fine with them figure-8ing too. If they can hook it, then that's a good thing in my book.

Actually, I like to play jokes on people and send fish at their lures. It can be a blast watching a Muskie follow your lure and then have it go over and attack their lure when they aren't expecting it. It does take a little stealth to time the fish and your buddies retrieve without them knowing it, but the laughs can be worth it. You just have to line the fish and your buddy up and then reach out and send the fish their way - and then watch what happens. I've almost peed my pants a couple of times it was so funny. "What the ****! Where did that fish come from!?" And then "Could you tell me next time you're going to do that!?"

Try it sometime. It can be more fun than catching a fish yourself.

No BS. I actually do that, but not with every fish of course and not on everyone. I always let my wife and kids know when I'm sending a fish their way. But if its one of my buddies, I have a hot fish behind my lure and see a chance to catch them napping, then I go for it. But it doesn't always work of course. Sometimes the fish just swim under the boat and are gone. But most of the time the fish will at least look at their lure and that can be enough to get a good laugh.

Fact is, I love playing practical jokes on people. I had fake dog-poop going around my company for months last year and am now working on a flying fake, but realistic looking spider (one that looks like a big banana spider). It seems the affect would be best if the spider jumps right at people such as when opening a drawer or cabinet. The fart machine is always funny too. Got my wife and kids with that one.

Oh yeah, I put the fake dog-poop on the floor of my boat to see how my buddies would respond. Might have to bring the fart machine along once I can fish again....

If one guy stops fishing when the other guy moves a fish how will you ever get two in the net. We won't figure eight by the other guys fish but both guys keep fishing until someone hooks up. You never know if someone else is down there watching.

Sled, There are more ways of having fun in a boat than just catching fish. How about putting a flying spider in someone's tackle box? Now, that would be funny.

Herb is spot on (as usual).
One time a buddy and I had just put a 36" fish in the livewell to recuperate so as a joke I raised a bigger fish and directed it right into the livewell without my buddy's knowledge. You should have seen the look on his face when he went to release the fish, opened the livewell and saw 2 in there. Priceless.

No, I'm still on my meds. Although I can't take them during the day because I have to drive.

Have to admit that I am getting a little stir-crazy because I had ankle reconstruction surgery a month ago and have been on crutches/knee caddy ever since. It was kind of a big deal with bone grafts from my leg, sawing, drilling and some rather big screws to hold it all together. I have actually only been on the water Muskie fishing twice all year because my ankle was getting so bad in June. I hope to get off the crutches/knee caddy in a couple weeks and then maybe in a couple more weeks I just might be able to get out fishing again.

But I can still play jokes on people. I'm thinking about going down to a boat landing, putting some fake dog poop on one the docks and then watch to see how people avoid it. I'm thinking some with a foot-print in it might have the greatest affect.

Or maybe go to a golf course and put this out and watch people walk by it:

At least I can cast toys to the cats. Hard to figure-8 sitting on the couch though.

Good day all

In our boat we normally all figure 8 for a lazy fish but let the first person to raise a really hot muskie keep figure 8-ing alone. On swim-offs we may let the person who raised it get the first cast back, but after that we alternate. One of my biggest southern muskies was a swim-off from my wife's figure 8 - she still talks about that one

I'm with Ja Rule - on this one. Its a team effort. If you're the one with the follow just say "fish"! Other guy freezes, no boat noise or movement. If the other guy is in mid retrieve w/ non floating lure - if you have to, continue retrieve to the boat - then freeze.

Herb- you are wicked funny!

Have fun!

It's not a problem as long as the partner doesn't brag to much. I had brought a fish in on topwater and it swam under the boat the next cast my partner had it eat his suick boatside. He won the league night with a 43" fish. I was happy that he caught it but all the talk about his skill in getting the fish to hit boatside was a little much when he couldn't get a lab to follow him with a T-bone in his hand.

Just my opinion, but when I go muskie fishing I'm all about boating the fish........
Doesn't matter who in the boat does the catching.
I almost get as much a thrill out of Netting other ppls fish than having someone net mine.
I've had follows that went off and in a different direction and told my boat partner to cast over there,...... and WHAM ! they nailed it,...... That's exciting to me.
