LOTW/Canada Boat Requirements

I am headed to LOTW in July. Not the first time I am taking my boat, but I have heard that certain items are needed in the boat to be legal. Maybe I was not legal before and thought I was.

Besides the standard fire extinguisher, working bow and stern lights, horn, current registration, life jackets and a throwable what do I need? Yes, I have a compass and GPS which I know are not required, but can come in very handy. Do I need a paddle(s) in the boat? I suppose it would always be smart to have these along, but are they required? Am I missing anything else? I know what I need for Wisconsin and Lake Michigan, but I do not want to have any trouble up there.

Just want to get a jump on the trip and have everything set. God, the middle of May will not come soon enough. Anyone else sick of this cold?

Thanks in advance for the help on this one.

Chuck

It seems the regs up there vary some, not sure why. On Wabigoon, you will be sent to shore if you do not have two paddles, a bailer bucket, a whisltle, and 100' of rope that will float. The standard stuff, like a throwable PFD cushion, PFDs for everyone on board, and fire extinguisher must also be onboard.

Chuck,

In addition the the above listed, I think it's 2 paddles, or 1 paddle and an anchor. Always a good idea to have a rigged anchor at the ready in case of a motor failure in high wind. Especially near land, or other hazzards.
You will also need a (working) waterproof flashlight.

The best way to sure you're legal is to pick up oe of those little orange "boat kits", available in related stores in Canada. I think Canadian Tire sells one for about $20 cd.

When I have been checked in Canada they tell me I have to have what is required in my home state. I think there are certain things though that you have to have. I am not quite sure on flares.

Here's a link to the Canadian coast guard site that has all the current requirements for equipment that is required to boat in Canada.

(copy and paste this in your browser)

http://www.ccg-gcc.gc.ca/obs-bsn/sbg-gsn/6mpower_e.htm

Note that these requirements are for boats up to 6 meters (about 20'), there are slightly different requirements for boats over 6 meters.

Thanks guys! This really helps a lot. Doug, that is a great site that anyone going to Canada should visit to make sure that they are completely up to speed. One can never do too much investigating or be overly prepared when it comes to having all of the necessary safety requirements.

If the rest of you have not visited the site that Doug posted, you should visit it!

Thanks again,

Chuck
