Fishing HUGE Lures

I'm getting into some serious trolling this year....and I've got some serious trolling baits that I obtained this off-season that I've never used before.

Have any of you trolled HUGE lures and caught fish??
I just purchased a Wishmaster and I have several "Jake-style" minnowbaits that are 15-17"...some of them are double jointed...these too are massive lures. Does anyone troll these successfully out there??

What kind of equipment do you have (rods and reels)?? I have some Ex-Heavy 8' rods and I'm leaning towards getting an Abu 10000C (2-speed) for the really big lures, and a couple of Sealine 47LC's.

Hey Stever, I'd get one reel w/ a low gear that will crank big Believers etc. in easily, maybe a Garcia 7000 or such. I got a Pete Mainia w/ a 4.2:1 speed that cranks well, and I also use the Diawas and Penn reels w/ low gearing that crank in big stuff well; they ain't fast, but they will crank w/ having to do the "up/down pump action...

So your the bum who got that wishmaster for $150 or so. Man if only I was not asleep and forget the check ebay that day.

Now make sure you bring it along with you in November for a true test. [:p]

Steve I have had bad experiences with 2 speed abus so be carefull at what you buy. As for rods make sure they are strong enough as well as making sure the drag is lose enough in case of a major hit or snag. I personaly like the lower gear ratio for reeling in those monster without having to stop the boat.

One last thing, most larger bait work better at slower speeds. [:sun:]

I use the Diawa reels with a custom made solid fiberglass rod...The Abu 7000's are also a nice choice...

One of the rods that gets quite a lot of attention for the bigger baits like Wishmaster is the SWC70HF. It's a blend of SCII and SCI with an extra weave of graphite for strength. The drawback is that it is a saltwater boat rod and might not fit into all rod holders.

How do you intend to fish them?

Off planer boards, 10 feet down, for suspended musky?

Grind rock?

Fast?

Slow?

Your going to find that the style of rod, line, and reel may vary under each of these different presentational methods...

I haven't trolled artificials longer than 12 inches as of yet, but I do troll live suckers in the 17 - 22 inch range and yes, I've caught some very big muskies doing this...
