Location: Stones throw away...finally!! | Thinking about tying a simple overhand knot 3 or so feet above my leader to help alert me while night fishing, but nervous as to what effect it may have on the strength of the line. Anyone tried anything like this or have another suggestion? Perhaps tying a bobber stop to the line would be a better idea. I put a glow bead above my leader to protect my tiptop, but wondering if there is another way to help me better my figure 8 at night. I also sweep the rod tip left and right closer to the end of the retrieve to get an idea how much line is out. My 8s aren't bad now, just looking for them to be a little better/consistent. Thanks. |

| I double the line up and tie a surgeons knot about 2'-3' from the end around the main line. Then, with the "looped" end tie a "bucher power knot" to your leader. The first knot tells you when to figure 8 and you have a double line in the event your line was damaged/failure, prop, rocks, etc. fighting a fish. Never had a issue with the "loop" going around the rod tip or bait- once it gets wet you can hardly tell the difference between the single and doubled portion.
There is a really good thread on this on another popular musky site with pictures and gives a better description than I. "Search" function should find it

The first time I saw this was up at AML on Eagle. All of their guides do this but they tie their line directly to the flour leader. It looks and sounds weird shooting out their rods when they are casting but they never get cut off.

| I learned the best way for me is to tie line to floro leader with a double uni or a nail knot . 80#braid to 100 or 80 # floro
If you make your leader about 3' to 4', The knot goes thu first guide. This will let you know where your at.Practice during the day you will be amazed how fast you get into a groove. After many years of fishing at AML Steve would say some people hear but don't listen. Practice with braid & some heavy mono to practice the knot. There is a tool u can by at Corens rod & reel in Chicago that will make perfect nail knots. I've never had a failure with many fish caught. double up your braid if you don't feel confident with single line to floro leader.
