Looking for a rod specifically for throwing large rubber like medusas and pounders. Without tossing out $370 for a big dawg legend tournament what are some othe good options? Thanks for your input!!

The Super Mag (xxh) Musky Innovations 9'. Is completely indestructible and will throw any bait made! IMO the best value out there.

Tackle Industries XXH is my pick. It's a light-weight rod that will throw anything. Can't beat the cost/value on this one!

Contact Jason at Michigan Musky Shop. He has lot of the Musky Innovations Pro Series rods that were re-tipped. They're an inch or 2 shorter & cost around $100-$110 vs. paying $180.

Just an FYI but the TI rods are still on special for 5 more days for the summer special. Then they all go to full retail price.

Thanks,

PS-Mike Hulbert just caught that monster 57.5 on a custom TI rod and he uses his equipment hard for his guide service.

TI Rod all the way! They way the XXH loads up with heavy rubber it much easier of your body, and the long "tail" or butt section of the rod allows you to get great leverage on the bait. Just know that your casting motion should change a little bit when throwing these baits. Its more of a lob than a whip, allowing the flex of the rod to do the work.

I've been using a 9' Tackle Industries XXH for Pounders and like it. The rod is quite light for the power it has, and casts the baits well. It is a little slower action than many of XXH rods out there, so it will flex a little more when ripping Pounders hard. There's always a trade off there. Slower rods seem to do more of the casting work for you but may make you work a little harder while ripping the baits. Faster rods might take a touch more casting effort but load less on hard pulls.

Overall I like the TI XXH for Pounders, but I wouldn't mind trying the Thorne Predator suited for Pounders (XH or XXH?) if somebody wanted to send me one... for free...

Might be worth reaching out to Dadson Rods, they are building on a new blank for big rubber. Typically a 9' foot rod, but they build it to order and customize to your needs.I have an 8'5" on the way. BR

I use a Musky Innvation 18oz super mag rod, it has served me well for three years now, and it's just going on and on. IMO, the actions of the MI rods, largely surpasses those of other brands I have fished.

If your looking for a rod with a little more "bling" and customized you might also think about getting a custom built rod on a TI blank. Jeremey does a real nice job. He has the 9' TI blanks and next week he will have the new 7'6" TI blanks as well. He can do a lot for just over $200 on a TI blank.

Take a look at some of his builds on his site

Good custom builder.

Got a 9'3" okuma xh last summer that I like a lot for big rubbers. Didn't like the split grip at all so I put pipe insulation over the split section and sealed it with electrical tape and it has been quite comfortable against my side and arm. I've thrown mammoth sues and two pounders as hard as I can with no issues. Greatt rod for the $$. I also have 9'6" xh preditor with is lighter and has faster action. Very nice rod bu t I paid almost double and I bought it used! Both worth every penny. I Havent tried TI rods or any xxh rods but both cast and handle the heaviest baits made just fine in my opinion

i have the legend tourney big dawg rod paired with a diawa saltist 20. Although this is a real nice setup for rubbers imo i think its too light for pounders. It will launch mag dawgs perfect but it seems to flex all the way thru the handle when throwing pounder dogs/medussas. Its rated 4-12 ounces and in that range its perfect. otherwise it seems to much weight
