| That's encouraging but is 32-33 mph really do-able in the 1700? I have a 16 foot Yarcraft tiller (slightly smaller than the Tuffy at 16-0 length, 78 in width and 760 pound hull) and with a 60 hp 4 stroke I can get about 28-29 with 2 guys/gear. I'm looking to upgrade boats and like the layout of the 1700 tiller but I'm more interested if it can get a little better top end speed. Is the hull shaped better for speed on the Tuffy than the Yarcraft? |

| I ran a 1700 with 60 hp mariner and could get low 30's. If I had a full load and 3 people it was typically right at 30. BR |

Location: Hayward, WI | I don't have experience with either boat you mention, but your current boat is likely a 32-33 MPH boat with just you and a light load too.
I run an older Alumacraft Navigator 165 with a 50 (boat rated for 60). With me and light load that boat will do about 32-maybe 33 if everything is perfect. With two guys and our gear I'm down to around 28.5-29.
I doubt the 1700 will do 33 with two guys and a good load of gear. The 1760 with a 75 maybe?
If you are looking to change to the 1700 to increase your speed I don't think it would be worth it. Maybe you'd get an extra MPH, but you'll never notice an extra MPH when going from spot to spot, even on big water.

| My 1700 with a 115 optimax with 3 people and a full load hits 39mph. It has a 4 blade prop on it. With 2 people its about 40.5. By myself its around 43. |

| I fish with a group in Canada each year where we travel a lot in a pack to remote locations. The slowest boat in the group right now is 33 mph and everyone else with bigger rigs slows down to stay together for navigating and safety reasons. I just don't want to have the new boat that makes the group slow down further. Personally 29 mph is good enough for me, I just don't want to hold everyone else back... |

| I ran a 1700 tiller for 12+ years and only got over 30mph with the lightest of loads. My outboard was a Merc 60 two cycle. I eventually upgraded to a stainless merc vengeance prop. The prop improved hole shot, but top end improvement was barely noticeable from the alum prop. Average top speed for me was 29mph with a normal, two person load. Heavy loads would slow me down to approx 27 mph. I logged thousands of hours in my 1700; speeds are from GPS. Different boats of the same model can run slightly differently, so it's possible that you'll find a faster one but you should test drive before you buy if speed is a concern. While my 1700T wasn't a speed demon, it was a very nice boat to fish out of and handled the water very well for a 17'. |

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Your 1700 featured a completely different interior and laminate schedule, was much heavier than the new 1700, and load and balance was totally different. It sounds like it was propped either with an aluminum low pitch prop or propped for power with a stainless. The new 1700 has the same interior as all the Deep V models now and is composite.

| If you are worried about speed go with a bigger motor. I'm running a 90 optimax tiller on a tuffy rated for 75. The console version of the boat can hold a 135 so the 90 is no problem. I did it because of a higher cruise speed. It will run 39 mph 2 guys full gear. The cruise speed is 30 which is perfect for me. However to make it safer I did go with the new Merten hydrolic assist system. Yamaha makes a new 70 that would perfect for that boat. Pm me if you want additional details. |

I think the 90 would be awesome on the 1760T. With that said I would be very nervous about doing it. Not really for safety, but coast guard, insurance, etc. Would be a sweet rig but I would be asking a lot of questions before I powered my boat above the max rating. |

| As much as I'd like to put a 70 on there... there's the liability issue. Second, every time I've owned a boat my insurance company requires hp rating and verifies with serial numbers of the boat and motor. Don't think you can or should get around it. If Steve says the hull and weight distribution has changed then it probably can do low 30's with a properly propped 60 hp and that's really all I need. |
