| You know you're getting old when your pre-departure checklist reads something like this:
1. Boat key
2. Pain killers
3. Glasses - in case you have to re-tie while on the water
4. ....
We do what we have to do to keep fishing !! |

I'm not that old but it fits the gap for an excuse!! Ha Ha
Glasses are the worst. I need them for up close/readers so I bought like 30 pairs of readers and put them everywhere I go. Now I have to push myself to actually put them on! (Now that's a male age thing) |

I have so many pairs of cheaters. I have four pair down by the work bench just in case I would breakdown and read the instructions. |

| Folks, you are approaching this issue of memory in entirely the wrong way. What I tell my adult children is that my memory is fine. The difference between my memory and theirs is that mine is like a main frame computer that has been accumulating data for over sixty years. I have an incredible number of files, within hundreds of folders. Some is still on magnetic tape. Some on discs, etc. It takes time to retrieve data from that huge memory bank. Their memory on the other hand is like a little laptop, with two or three folders with five files each in them. Does not take long to find what you are looking for when there is so little data there to begin with. |

Location: Maple Grove, MN | When your joints start to give out and you need surgery to repair them. I had ankle surgery a couple of weeks ago and am going be on crutches for at least another month. My Dad always said that someday those old injuries would catch up to me. Don't know what hurts more - where my ankle was sawed apart and then screwed back together or my leg where the surgeon took the bone grafts from.
Muskie fishing for me this year - not so much. Maybe in September. Maybe. |

| I spent all last weekend on my boat since my wife was away on a business trip. Slept in it at night and fished all day. My list included toilet paper, pain medication, glasses, sunscreen, generator to recharge my batteries, and bug spray. I also have to put in my checklist to make sure that the plug is in every time I launch by boat.
I have still not completely recuperated from last weekend. Wont stop me from fishing again this weekend tho... |

This is why it's important to keep TP in the boat. If I waited for IT to move I'd never make it to the water! |

Location: Maple Grove, MN | You have surgery and find yourself comparing it to all your previous surgeries.
You get a letter from the Hospital informing you that the tenth surgery is not free. (It was worth a shot anyway.)
Your neighbor comes over to let you know that your kids are making bets with their kids on what you're getting fixed next year. And, by the way, how is that shoulder doing these days?
Due to physical problems, you haven't been fishing for so long that your boat is overflowing with old cardboard boxes, swimming floats, half-empty water bottles and a bunch of other stuff. And your fishing tackle is buried somewhere under all of that.
You find yourself saying "If I can get out fishing this year" instead of "When I get out fishing". ![](https://muskie.outdoorsfirst.com/board/images/emoticons/frown.gif)

| Love this discussion! I have 2 to add:
Worried about losing your expensive hearing aids when leaning over to release a fish, but also worried that without them you won't hear your partner yell, get the net!
This one happened, 20 years ago, I was still fairly young but my fishing buddy's step dad was not. We raised a big fish 10 miles from nowhere on LOTW. We were all doing the Fig. 8; the fish didn't hit. The step-dad took a vile out of his pocket and started popping pills. I asked, what's up? He responded, nitro! Yikes, I asked him what the heck he was doing out in the middle of LOTW chasing Muskies? He said there was nothing he'd rather be doing! We still call that spot the Nitro Rock and now I understand what he meant ![](https://muskie.outdoorsfirst.com/board/images/emoticons/smile.gif) |
