All,

I am going to be up in Colorado in August, September and plan on chasing some Tiger Muskies while I am up there. I will be in the Colorado Springs area, what lakes should I target within about a 3 hour radius of that location? Feel free to PM me if you prefer.

Thanks,
Jared

Sadly there are no tigers left in CO, stocking stopped quite some time ago. You are near great trout and pike fishing though. BR

There are Tigers in Colorado, just not large populations of them. When they are stocked it is to manage rough fish populations, not to create a sport fishery.

If you google Colorado fish explorer and spend a little time searching there you will come up with them names of some of the most likely lakes holding them. Cheers.

I live here and you should take a look at the last year fish were stocked, once CO was no longer able to bring fish into the state to stock, it stopped. There are a couple of fish still left in Gross, but that is about it. BR

first of all to think there are no tiger muskies in colorado or to think only one lake holds them is ridiculous. lake powell actually has them still. not to mention they are talking about stocking more tigers now to control northern pike populations. gotta love internet fishermen. shoulda asked this question on a scooba-diving forum

If it helps, having dicussed this with gentleman at the DNR who was in charge of muskie in CO at length, he feels the best chance at any lingering fish would be at Gross Res. They do pop up from time to time, but with the last year class in 08 no lakes have a fishable population for the most part. BR

Ha, whens the last time you talked to a DNR guy? According to this: http://wildlife.state.co.us/SiteCollectionDocuments/DOW/Fishing/Fis...

Gross Res was stocked with Tigers in 2012.

It is possible if they got fish from UT, but would be curious so how many and if that actually took place. That would be the first stocking since 08 and could just be a typo. I fish there for salmon and have not noticed this. BR

It's mentioned four times:
"Previous Stocking...2012...Tiger Muskie"
"This program received its greatest boost in 2012 as 1,400 tiger muskie @ 7 inches were stocked."
"Stocking 1,400 tiger muskie in 2012 should help as well."
"At present, tiger muskie are only available through out-of-state trades. Accordingly, annual availability is limited but we got some from Nebraska in 2012!"

Other mentions:
"Huge tigers are present in Gross; they appear to roam lake-wide."
"Tigers are stocked in relatively low numbers to provided a diversified fishery and control suckers."

It would be great if we get access to fish again, last stocking was in 08 prior to this and very few fish are still there. What you recommend for 12-15 inch fish?

They do want a program, it only stopped due to lack of clean fish available. The long-term plan I was told was to get fish from UT and try to build our own program, but that is no longer an option. I am familiar with NE fish, so perhaps they will be as kind to me in CO as they are in NE, just have to wait 3-4 years for them to grow up. BR

Back in the mid 90's I fished Horseshoe Res. in southern CO and Cherry Valley around Denver for tigers. And pike in Eleven Mile, Spinney, and the Yampa River in Steamboat, the trout guys hated both. Guessing these lakes arent actively stocked anymore

All,

Thank you all for your input/information on this, it is really appreciated. I really did not mean to start a hot thread or get anyone's blood pressures up.
@Pointerpride102: I currently do live in UT and we have (had...) a good program here for Tiger Musky that was making substantial progress. Big fish and a lot of them, just concentrated mainly to about 3 bodies of water. Love the fishing here and blessed to get to enjoy it and see these fish grow into beasts! Going to be out of town is all and would like to keep fishing them while I am away. If you follow the news around here at all or are interested, you will see we recently had a major setback to some otherwise serious progress in our TM breeding/stocking program. It's a shame but it is what it is...Salt Lake Tribune did a story on it if you are interested. Not going to post the link since it will get everyone fired up for sure!
@Guest: Great idea on checking the scuba dive sites, have not gotten to that stage in the research process yet. Still have some time though and plan on looking at some of those avenues for intel as well. Did however speak with a colleague from work (scuba dives a lot) on Thursday who is currently in CO and he just dove Lake Pueblo. He said he put eyes on Tiger Musky there but they were pretty small in numbers/size, and hanging in the shallows/less than 50 FOW.
@Ben R: Returned your PM Sir, thanks.
@Customwood0720: Yes, Fish Explorer was one of the first places I checked right away, there are a lot of listings for TM fisheries on that page...I saw the listing and didn't believe there could possibly be that many locations stocked with them...After checking a couple other locations I decided to ask the question on here as I did not was not totally sure the info I was finding was accurate. Going to check BigFishTackle/CO as well and see if I can't get some info there also.

I will keep researching and checking in with new information that members post on here. So far it seems like I will be focussing more efforts on the Pike fisheries. Read some good stuff on Eleven Mile Res., Williams Fork Res., Spinney Mountain Res., and Stagecoach Res. for some good-sized Pike. Any suggestions/ideas on this topic are welcomed/appreciated as well.
Again gents, thank you very much for the help thus far and any future ideas.

Thank you all,
Jared

Saltlife....I worked for the UDWR for 6 years and just left there for a position in Minnesota. Decent musky fishing in Newton, pineview and now Joe's. I just never got into it too much while I was there. I knew about the musky debacle at lee Kay long before the news papers ran it. Really a collossal error on the UDWR's part. I feel bad for one of the guys in the salt lake office who has been working extremely hard on this program and has done an outstanding job on it, but there are other people in that same office that don't care about anything but the trout and couldn't care less if the tiger musky program failed. The lack of warm water fisheries interest by some of the leadership roles is partly what led to my leaving the agency. It is a very good agency but like any agency makes some really head scratching decisions sometimes.

You probably already know, but in the coming years you should be putting some considerable time in on Joe's. I think you will see some slobs come out of there in a few years time.

Can you read? I have serious doubts.

Would fishing lake Powell count as first hand knowledge? Just want to make sure I'm doing this right...

Shooting down his own post about a worthwhile, fish able population of tigers in Powell was a nice touch though. Not many guests are able to identify themselves after a ridiculous post and simultaneously shoot themselves down. Takes talent!

@Pointer: If you were involved in the program to get the Tigers to UT initially and maintain stocking/upkeep, I thank you for your efforts. The issue of the breeding ponds really is unfortunate and a major setback to a legitimate program with a lot of potential. I'm sure you have far more intel on the situation than what the avid Tiger Chasers here have access to. We are all reading the same articles/seeing the same stories on the news as the rest of the public. I hope that the individual you speak highly of does not suffer in this mess, we need to support the good guys that are trying like he is. On the flipside, I do hope that the ones that are responsible are punished accordingly, quite certain some heads will or have rolled...Having bad leadership can make or break an organization's success. I have dealt with some less than cerebral leadership in my career I assure you! I know there are a lot of great folks in the UDWR doing great things, as per usual, the negative actions of the few...
Again, thank you for the intel and your work with the UDWR. And yes, very familiar with Joe's;-) and again, totally agree!
