Graph Interference?

I have a 24volt system running a trolling motor but have the batteries wired in parallel - not series. Motor works fine but was having a bunch of interference with one of my Humminbird 597 HD graphs that was connected to one of the trolling batteries every time I would run the trolling motor and would get large interfernce bars and depth readings would get all screwed up when the trolling motor was running. Decided to shift the graph connection from the trolling battery to the starter battery. That cleared up the interference. However, found next time I was on the water that most every time I started the boat it would freeze my 597 and couldn't even power it down and back on. I would have to disconnect from the mount, remount it, and then I could restart it. Clearly the short burst of cranking current upon startring the boat up is causing an issue.

Any thoughts on what I can do to either remove the interference when it is hooked up to the trolling battery or address the freezing issue by current bursts from the starter battery?

Much appreciated.

Brad

ok so the only thing that gets hooked up to trolling motor batteries is the trolling motor. Also, why would you run batteries on a 24 volt system parallel? You should have a bridge running from neg to pos, and the pos wire on one battery and the neg wire on the other battery on the terminals that are not hooked up to the bridge. That is what creates a 24 volt system.
I do not think it matters but do you run an in-line fuse on your positive wire on your bird? I only ask because I know that bird does not send one with the graph. Otherwise have you had any issues with your cranking battery?? It is not normal for your graph to freeze up like that, I run two on my cranking battery and never have an issue. Most of the time if you start your motor and your graph shuts off your battery is getting old. Perhaps go and get your battery load tested, or else put a full charge on it and then put a voltage meter on it.

1. You should not connect your TM batteries in parallel for 24 volts. That would be 12volts.
2. Never connect your electronics, especially sonars, to your TM batteries.
3. When you start your big motor, the voltage drops enough that the sonar freezes. It's just enough to not let it do a complete shutdown, and it freezes. I suggest you replace your cranking battery with a newer, bigger cranking battery, or better yet, a dual purpose battery.
4. Also, make sure your connections to the big motor are clean and mechanically sound.

Guys, thanks for your response but I need to correct something. I mis-spoke and I do have the batteries in series - not parrallel. Sorry, as that might change your reponses.

However, I think there was one key suggestion - that graphs shouldn't be connected to trolling motor batteries?? So both my console and bow graph should be run to the starting battery?

Also, my cranking battery is 1 year old so it wouldn't/shouldn't be that causing the freezing issue. But maybe it should be a bigger one??

Thanks,
Shep

Yes, run from your cranking battery, providing it's big enough to handle the load, and fully charged after every outing.

It's possible your battery is just not big enough. Doesn't matter how old it is.

As I suggested, I'd check it out, and replace with a dual purpose Cranking/Deep Cycle battery.

x2 had this issue before when i picked up my boat .also clean connections are a must.
