Looking at electronic options for a new boat. I'm not going to dump a ton into sonar to start with but i'd like one decent one. I'm going for a console mounted unit and I'd like one that can network with a future 1100 series hbird. I'm tore between the 798 for side scan, or get a bigger unit and give up sidescan for an 858. Old boat had down scan and I've never had sidescan however. I'm just not sure about being worth the extra cost and since I haven't had it before I wont miss the sidescan. I'm sure almost everyone will chime in it's worth it, but I'd have a very hard time ever coming up with $2700ish for an 1198. The 1158 however would be more obtainable.

I would go for the 1158 with down imaging if you can find a good price. I have both the 1198 and 1158 and don't really use the side imaging that much. The maps are so much easier to see on the larger screen. I think the down imaging is much more useful for what I do.

I use the side imaging a lot and would recommend it in anything 8 series or bigger. Anything smaller then that and you're really limiting what you can see (the 8 series is marginal IMOP which is what I have).

I have a 598 and I would give up the down imaging in a heartbeat, but LOVE the SI. I take one pass through a bay and find the one rock pile 150' away from the boat...the alternative is to be essentially on top of it to find it. A larger screen would really help though. On the bow I could understand getting DI or regular 2D instead of SI though, as Im not cruising looking for a hot spot from the bow.

I crappie fish alot too and everyone's said SI is a must. It'll be a couple weeks before I start trying to finalize something but I' may try to swing getting a 998 now. Just have to wait and see. If it's over budget then I'll still decide where to sacrifice on.

I had a 797 (aka 798) on my old boat and now have the 998 (console) and a 788 (bow) on the new one. I rarely use the DI, but the SI gets used constantly. One of the most useful, in my opinion, is when paralleling a weed line, you can always see how far you are from it. It also will show you any inside/outside turns and other irregularities in the weed line. This is especially useful in stained water or low light and night conditions when weeds aren't visible. There are too many advantages to list, but I know I have come to depend on it, probably too much, when trying to put the pieces together.

Bigger is better. After picking up an 858 Di this spring, I wish I spent the extra $150 and when with the 958.

I like the Di image, but I think it looks cooler than it is productive.
