I'm just getting into musky fishing this year and i'm going to be buying some of my first lures soon. I'm wondering what you guys think the top 10 year round lures are as well as their color patterns.

Double 8 and 10 bucktials (black, black/gold)
Rubber swimbaits, regular 4-5oz and mag 8oz (black/orange, anything with gold on it) (All are good: Shack Attack, Bulldawgs, Medussa, SuperD, Hard Head, etc.)
Suicks 9" and 10" weighted (black and Perch Thriller)
Phantom (any color, they are just a great bait and put fish in the boat)
Way too many great topwater lures out there to mention. Lots of good handmade topwaters that really throw water adn sound out.
I think that is 7 or 8....time to go to work.

The traditional wisdom is that you start with small lures in the spring; and then go larger as the water warms up in the summer. If you're just starting out I would not buy anything that is sized for trophy size fish. You need to get experience just catching skis. And the larger lures are not optimal for numbers. Besides, a heck of a lot of trophy size fish have been taken on 5.5" and 6" crankbaits. Starting out I would want two silver blade black skirt in line bucktails: one a French or Indiana style blade; and one a willow leaf blade. I would want a gold blade, brown or yellow skirt combo as well. I like the Mepps Magnum Musky Killer, tandem tail, for summer. A Giant Killer with tandem tail would also be on my list. The rest of my beginner's list would be crankbaits. You can get into jerks later. If you're fishing clear water, stay on natural colors. Stained water, you might turn to firetiger. I would want my Believers, 6", 7", and 8", 6" Jake with #1 hooks, 7.5" Grandma, and 6" and 8" Depthraiders. I would be content with that for a long while; and you won't break the bank. If you want to spend some money, I would get both a 5.5" and 6.5" Wiley for shallow water situations. Good track record.

Go out and get a JR double Cowgirl, Nickle blades, black skirt and throw it till you catch a musky. Also Black skirt, orange blade is a good color as well.

Another bait that works well is a walleye colored mag dawg. Make sure to get the one with the white tipped tail. Not a hard bait to run by anymeans and rubber does catch a ton of fish.

Also I would grab a smaller crank bait, like a 6" jake in whatever color you want. Or a Shallow Invader, ITs a fun bait to use and can really get you thinking about what technique to try. It is an awesome twitch bait (my personal favorite)
