......as I've heard them called, are interesting to me. I'm not sure what the show was called but I saw something on TV that super slo-motioned different things to better understand them. I think it would be cool to see a close up slo-mo view of a backlash happening!!!!! Could be neat to watch.

A backlash? Simple, the spool is spinning faster than the line is leaving it.

I know exactly what happens, I'd just like to see all the overlapping and knotting of line as it happens. Seems like it would look cool!

A backlash in my boat is always cool when it happens to someone else! My boys and I always razz each other when we jack up a cast.

I agree with you "mh63" for the most part. With my Dad getting on in age, these days I usually have to work on his backlashes....those aren't funny. But anyone else in the boat is fair game for the 5678 talking when they do it. Or if they put a lure in a tree, always a treat!

I've certainly had and seen some doozies in my day. Probably the funniest backlash story I have was fishing with Mark Thorp for the first time about 20 years ago.  We were casting pretty strong for a couple days and felt a new Marc good enough to razz him a little after he got a backlash.

It started with him mumbling something about hating professional overruns. I deadpanned; “what are you talking about?” He said; “you know... a backlash”.  I said; “what’s that?” He started to explain what a backlash was and then looked over at me and said; “screw you #*$%!”

I remember seeing some "out takes" of Joe Bucher having a backlash, laughing while he is fixing it, then catches a small one when he started to retrieve the lure!

I had the same thing happen once. I was casting a Radke minnow and had a "Backlash" and when I started reeling in there was a 34 incher tugging on the other end. That lure sat there for at least 2 minutes. the fish must have been staring it down and grabbed it when it first moved.

I was actually very impressed last night. I brought a buddy out musky fishing for the first time last night. He had never used a bait caster before in his life. I also had him using my Saltist. And for those of you that have one know that is is an "over-run" machine if your not carefull. Well after four hours on the water he only backlashed 5 times. Which is pretty impressive for a guy that has never used a bait caster in his life and had to learn on a reel like the Saltist. With any luck he will be one of the few that can get into the sport without going overboard.... But I doubt it.

I'm surprised you could hand the Saltist to some newby and not have it go really badly. It probably took me two months of using it before I could go through a whole day without one bad enough that you had to sit down to pick it out. I wouldn't even recomend stopping your fishing long enough to fix it...just pick up anther rod! Don't get me wrong, I like the reel and keep two of them in the boat. But the single most fun thing to do with it is totally unscrew the brake and wait patiently until you have a perfect "know-it-all" in the boat. Just keep letting out line while the guy tells you what a "top-stick" he is in every way and when you are ready to set the hook....give him the Saltist with big blades attatched and the boat positioned so that he is forced to cast into the wind. The results will be priceless!

Add me to the list of backlash fish. I had an overrun casting a double ten to fairly shallow water and after I picked out the lash and started reeling, I found out a fish had grabbed it. I landed a 43" fish.

it's an overlooked pattern i guess..buddy of mine last sept joined me for a few days in MN for his first MN adventure, 1st nite, 2 hours into his trip he casts out a d10, gets a backlash, picks it out, starts reeling and goes into the figure 8, and starts yelling "backlash fish! backlash fish"....45"er in the bag.... we got a good laugh

A guy with me got a backlash so bad that I had to drop him off at the landing to go get new line. Upon his return, we started where we left off. He then proceeded to catch a 50 incher! His first muskie!
