I'm going fishing for monster (50"+) pike in Alaska where they only allow a 'single, barbless' hook per lure. I'd like to use a 9" Suick. Any suggestions on where to place the hook, and how to keep it in a good hooking position so it doesn't go flat against the lure when a pike strikes it?

I would think you could pull the center cotter key run it through the eye of a big siwash hook and replace. I would also try a big open eye siwash hook and leave free swinging and if you had time before your trip try them to see what gives you better hookups. Barbs are highly overrated

I would try a bigger treble hook and "T" the hook so the hook points stick out a bit farther.

Although a treble is considered a single hook in Ontario I don't think that is the case for Alaska

No treble hooks are allowed! On ly 'single, barbless' hooks (Like a Siwash hook)

Try cutting the tips of the two other points on the trebles, leaving enough so it is no longer considered a treble but still holds the remaining hook away from the body. Then file the barb off the remaining hook.

I would think about other lure options. A suick with a single hook sounds like a good way to miss or lose fish.

Problem I see is moving that wood bait in a big fish's mouth to get a good hook set with just the one hook. I'd try to use a hard plastic bait where you have a better chance of getting that hook set.

But I like the idea of using a treble T's with the two hooks cut off. Guess you'll just have to try it. Your hooking rate will determine if you should stick with it.

I think prolly the best option is to use another lure... but if u have to go with the suick maybe try experimenting with attaching your single hook to a short wire lead coming off the nose ring, like saltwater butterfly jig style. U could try hanging some light weights on bottom hangers to try and keep the same action.maybe a magnet to keep the hook in place on the top of lure? Idk, Just a thought that wasn't mentioned.

I haven't tried this, so don't nkow if it would work:

drill 1/4" hole through body, just behind front hook spot

use long shanked single hook (eg. mustad 9/0 3506)

position hook with point forward (curved toward nose)

put hook eye partly or entirely through the hole you drilled -- wedge it firmly in place with tape-wrapped shank, weather stripping, cloth, rubber sponge etc.

connect the hook eye to the suick's nose eye with a loose (extra inch of give) piece of 7-strand, fluorocarbon etc. (this would be on top/dorsal of bait)

hook will ride in perfect position for strike, and when you set hook, fish will then pull it downwards out of the body so fish can't lever against the bait

might be a disaster...

Thanks for all of your suggestions! I am planning on using spoons, bucktails, 9" sluggo's, and other lures (Hellhounds, Savagear 4-play, Rapala's, etc.) I've modified to handle the the single hook. I'll post the results and let you know what worked best.

Shep, my apologies, I'm not trying to get any de-railing of the topic going but I posed this same topic with my local muskie shop and got some interesting feedback. It was why I was having fish spit the bucktails even after a SOLID set-up and I was pretty frustrated so I asked around.

I was told that unlike my feeling of having to move the bait, if I kept good pressure on the fish, e.g rod bent fully, the bait would move in the mouth pretty quickly as it relaxed it's bite..as in I was being concerned about a non-issue.

Hmmm...thinking on that seemed to make sense but I always figured that I'd need to move the bait too. Oh well, who knows...

Back to topic, I'd also just cut the two hookpoints off after putting on a split ring and some much larger trebles..??...Seems like a reasonable fix.

Good luck man. Sounds like a fun trip.

Don't forget to bring couple spinnerbaits. Pike love them.
