Hi Everyone,

Been up in the Leech lake area for two weeks now and I can definitely say, this year has been very humbling for me. I have been to multiple lakes, and only 3 fish to show for it. I'm not seeing much of any either. Was wondering if what I am experiencing has been the same with others experiences up here.

I've tried trolling, casting, deep and shallow, but nothing seems to be getting these fish triggered into even showing. Makes me wonder if due to our wonderful late ice out and cold water temps up until last week that these fish may have just gone to the abyss rather than on the breaks...

I'm puzzled and frustrated to say the least... I'm out of tricks...

What have been your experiences?

Thanks

Steve

Right there with your experience Steve. Last 3 weekends up north have been on again/off again with no consistency as to location, and for the most part no rhyme or reason as to activity. Only real action we have had was mid-day flurry a week ago during super moon, and caught fish both on shallow weeds, where they have traditionally been located, and open water. Prime evening sunset/moonrise was a bust. One week later we don't even see a fish in those same spots. Water temps right where they should be. My guess is still alot in open water and haven't moved in on traditional structure with any consistency. This is on 3 different lakes N and W of Leech. Talked to one guy fishing Mille Lacs rgularly who said this last week has been brutal and never saw a fish yesterday.

Nothing anyone doesn't experience on Leech regularly before July each year. Now add the extremely late ice out and it's no wonder you're not seeing many fish yet. Sounds like you've both done better than most. Stick to the area lakes and in my opinion don't hesitate to throw topwaters near emerging weeds, docks, and new bullrushes at dusk. Fish gotta eat.

Hiya,

Not fishing leech as leech never seems to turn on until July. Been on the area lakes trying everything you've mentioned...the fish are just not cooperating. Had two up this morning, but no takers. One other fish that surfaced to get a bite of air.

I will have to do a little more with the Cisco idea, though. Trolled through the pods, but have not tried casting for them out there. Did catch one last Tuesday over some 20 feet of water near deep water and pods of bait... Worth a try since I have nothing else working consistently.

On those smaller lakes up there in timescale this fishing those pods of baitfish after dark can be good. If the lakes gets calm you can see those baitfish breaking the surface and those skies are right below. I've had success on top waters and rolled cowgirls through them. Usually fishing over 25-60 feet of water. As the water warms this week it should get better.
